Orbital Crochet Dishcloth

Pattern Description:

This is an easy crochet pattern designed by Stacey Winklepleck. It is suitable for beginners who want to progress beyond making granny squares.

The pattern requires knowing how to create a magic circle, work double crochet, half double crochet, and perform increases. The finished dishcloth measures approximately 10.5 inches in diameter.

Materials Need & Measurements:

Yarn:

  • Brand: Knit Picks Dishie
  • Fiber Content: 100% cotton
  • Yardage: 190 yards (174 meters) per 100g ball
  • Colors Used:
    • Jalapeno (25785) – 1 ball
    • Honeydew (25410) – 1 ball Note: You will need 1 ball of each color for a striped version, or 1 ball total for a solid-colored version.
  • Yarn Weight: Approximate Category: Worsted Weight (#4 Medium), based on yardage and fiber content
  • Hook:
    • US 7 (4.5 mm) crochet hook
    • Or size needed to achieve the gauge below
  • Notions:
    • Tapestry needle (for weaving in ends)
    • Scissors
    • Blocking supplies (e.g., blocking mats, pins, and a spray bottle or steam source)
  • Gauge: 4 double crochet (dc) stitches = 1 inch

Stitching Instructions for Making the Orbital Crochet Dishcloth Pattern:

The instructions begin with a Set up round and proceed through Round 11, followed by finishing.

Set up:

Create a large Magic circle. Single crochet (sc), then double crochet (dc) 12 times. Join to the first dc with a slip stitch (sl st). Tighten the circle. You should have 12 stitches (st).

  • Round 1: Chain 3 (ch 3), which counts as the first dc throughout the pattern. Work a dc in the same space (sp). 

Work dc twice in the next sp. Repeat working dc twice in the next sp from * until the end of the round. Join with a sl st to the first dc. You should have 24 stitches.

  • Round 2: Ch 3. Work dc in the same sp. Work dc once in the next sp. Work dc twice in the next sp, then dc once in the next sp; repeat from * until the end of the round. Join with a sl st to the first dc. You should have 36 stitches.
  • Round 3: Ch 3. Work dc in the same sp. Work dc once in the next 2 sp. Work dc twice in the next sp, then dc once in the next 2 sp; repeat from * until the end of the round. Join with a sl st to the first dc. You should have 48 stitches.
  • Round 4: Ch 3. Work dc once all around. Join with a sl st to the first dc. You should have 48 stitches.
  • Round 5: Ch 3. Work dc in the same sp. Work dc once in the next 3 sp. Work dc twice in the next sp, then dc once in the next 3 sp; repeat from * until the end of the round. Join with a sl st to the first dc. You should have 60 stitches.
  • Round 6: Ch 3. Work dc in the same sp. Work dc once in the next 4 sp. Work dc twice in the next sp, then dc once in the next 4 sp; repeat from * until the end of the round. Join with a sl st to the first dc. You should have 72 stitches.
  • Round 7: Ch 3. Work dc in the same sp. Work dc once in the next 5 sp. Work dc twice in the next sp, then dc once in the next 5 sp; repeat from * until the end of the round. Join with a sl st to the first dc. You should have 84 stitches.
  • Round 8: Ch 3. Work dc once all around. Join with a sl st to the first dc. You should have 84 stitches.
  • Round 9: Ch 3. Work dc in the same sp. Work dc once in the next 6 sp. Work dc twice in the next sp, then dc once in the next 6 sp; repeat from * until the end of the round. Join with a sl st to the first dc. You should have 96 stitches.
  • Round 10: Ch 3. Work dc in the same sp. Work dc once in the next 7 sp. Work dc twice in the next sp, then dc once in the next 7 sp; repeat from * until the end of the round. Join with a sl st to the first dc. You should have 108 stitches.
  • Round 11 (final round): Ch 2. Work half double crochet (hdc) all around. Join with a sl st to the first hdc. You should have 108 stitches.

Finishing:

Weave in the ends. Block to flatten the dishcloth.
