Stitching Instructions for Making the Audrey Crochet Dress Pattern:

Start with the Foundation Chain:

  • Foundation Chain:
    • Ch 100 (or the number of stitches required for your size, adjust for your stitch count). This will create the base of the dress.
    • Make sure to count your stitches to ensure your foundation chain is even and matches the size you’re making.
  • Row 1:
    • Ch 1 (this doesn’t count as a stitch).
    • Work sc into each chain across the foundation chain. This gives a solid and firm base for the dress.
    • When you reach the end of the row, add with a sl st to the first sc.
    • Total stitches for XS = 100, but adjust based on your size (see the stitch counts for each size).
  • Row 2 (Main Body Begin):
    • Ch 2 (this counts as the first hdc).
    • Work hdc in each stitch around the entire row (including the sc stitches from Row 1). Hdc is a nice stitch to give structure and a slight stretch to the fabric.
    • At the end of the round, attach with sl st to the top of the initial ch 2.
  • Row 3:
    • Ch 3 (counts as the first dc stitch).
    • Work dc in each stitch around the round. Dc stitches are taller and create more drape in the fabric of the dress.
    • When you reach the end of the round, merge with a sl st to the top of the ch 3.
  • Row 4 – 5:
    • Ch 2 (counts as the first hdc).
    • Work hdc in each stitch around. This section adds structure and the fit of the bodice area.
    • Bond with a sl st to the top of the initial ch 2 at the end of each round.
  • Row 6-7:
    • Ch 3 (counts as the first dc).
    • Work dc in each stitch around.
    • After completing the row, tie with sl st to the top of the initial ch 3.
  • Row 8 (Textured Pattern):
    • Ch 3 (counts as the first dc).
    • Fpdc around the next stitch, then Bpdc around the following stitch.
    • Repeat the fpdc and bpdc sequence around the entire row, alternating between front post and back post stitches. This gives a textured, ribbed effect to the fabric.
    • Unite with sl st to the top of the first dc.
  • Row 9:
    • Ch 2 (counts as the first hdc).
    • Work hdc in each stitch around.
    • Attatch with sl st to the top of the initial ch 2 at the end of the round.
  • Row 10:
    • Ch 1 (counts as the first sc).
    • Work sc in each stitch around, creating a simple, smooth finish to this round.
    • At the end, connect with sl st to the first sc.

Shaping the Dress:

  • Row 11 (Waist Shaping):
    • To shape the waist, decrease (dec) as needed: Every 10th stitch, work a dec by inserting your hook into the next two stitches, yarn over, and pull through all three loops.
    • For example, dec in the 10th and 11th stitch, then sc until the next dec point. Continue this process until you achieve the waist measurement listed for your size (e.g., waist 60 for XS).
    • This step shapes the dress to fit snugly at the waist while allowing the rest of the dress to flow naturally.
    • After completing the waist shaping, pair with sl st.
  • Row 12 (Bust and Hip Shaping):
    • Depending on the bust and hip measurement, you may need to increase or decrease stitches. You can work inc (increase) by crocheting 2 stitches into a single stitch if more room is needed for the bust or hips.
    • For example, in the hip section: Work 2 dc in the same stitch for the increase.
    • At the end of the round, tTie with sl st.
  • Row 13-14 (Body of the Dress): Continue working dc in each stitch around. Work these rounds until the desired length of the dress is achieved.

Armholes:

  • Shaping the Armholes:
    • Once the body is the desired length and reaches the armhole depth (usually 16″ for XS), create openings for the arms.
    • To shape the armholes, leave a few stitches unworked on either side, or you can skip stitches (e.g., skip 4-6 stitches) on both sides, continuing the round as normal.
  • Straps:
    • To crochet the straps, once the top part of the dress is complete, ch the desired number of stitches based on your strap width preference.
    • For example, ch 40 (or more for wider straps), then sc or dc in each chain across. Attach both straps to the top of the dress, ensuring they are even.

Finishing:

  • Weaving in Ends: After completing the dress, use a darning needle to weave in all loose ends. Ensure the ends are securely hidden inside the garment to prevent them from unraveling.
  • Blocking: Carefully block the dress using a steam iron or by gently soaking it in water and laying it flat to dry. This will help even out the stitches and give the dress a polished, finished look.
  • Optional:
    • You can also add a decorative edge to the bottom of the dress by crocheting a sc or dc border. Alternatively, use lace patterns for a more elegant finish.
    • Add any embellishments, like beads, buttons, or a decorative belt, to complete the look.

Congratulations! Your Audrey Crochet Dress is now complete and ready to wear! Enjoy your beautiful handmade garment!
