Materials Needed & Measurements:

  • Suggested Yarn: Lion Brand Hometown or Hometown Tweed
  • Yarn Weight & Size: Super Bulky (5-6 wpi)
  • Gauge: 6.6 stitches and 8 rows = 10 cm (single crochet)
  • Hook Size: 9.0 mm (M/N)
  • Yardage: 336 – 400 yards (307 – 366 m)
  • Scissors
  • Tapestry needle for weaving in ends
  • Measuring tape
  • Pillow form (size according to your preference, e.g., 16″x16″)

  • ch: Chain
  • sc: Single Crochet
  • wc: Waistcoat Stitch
  • RS: Right Side
  • A: Color A (primary yarn color)

Instructions for Making Pure Joy Crochet Throw Pillow Pattern

  • Waistcoat Stitch (wc):
    1. Insert hook between the V’s of a single crochet.
    2. Yarn over (yo) and draw up a loop.
    3. Yarn over and draw through 2 loops.
  • Single Crochet (sc):
    1. Insert hook in the indicated stitch.
    2. Yarn over and draw up a loop.
    3. Yarn over and draw through 2 loops.

Pattern Notes

  • Keep your tension loose to make it easier to insert your hook.
  • The pillow is crocheted in one panel and then folded over.
  • Rows are worked from right to left; cut your yarn at the end of each row.
  • The right side (RS) is always facing you.
  • Attach yarn for the next row in the first sc of the previous row.
  • Always chain 1 and make 1st sc in the same space at the beginning of each row.
  • Leave a 4-5” tail at the beginning and end of each row.

  3. Note: Place a stitch marker on each side of the pillow at the ends of Row 24.
  4. Continue with the following rows:
    • Rows 25 – 28: (RS) Use Color A for four rows: sc in 1st st, wc in next 41 sts, sc in last st – 41 wc, 2 sc.
    • Rows 29 – 32: (RS) Switch to Color B: sc in 1st st, wc in next 41 sts, sc in last st – 41 wc, 2 sc.
    • Rows 33 – 36: (RS) Back to Color A: sc in 1st st, wc in next 41 sts, sc in last st – 41 wc, 2 sc.
    • Rows 37 – 40: (RS) Color B again: sc in 1st st, wc in next 41 sts, sc in last st – 41 wc, 2 sc.

  5. Finishing Up:
    • Fold the panel in half, RS together. Whip stitch the sides closed using the tails left from Row 1 and Row 44.
    • Insert a pillow insert to finish your throw pillow.
