Crochet Jellyfish

Pattern Description:

Create an adorable crochet jellyfish that works beautifully as a snuggly toy or a whimsical hanging decoration.

While originally inspired by hand-drying doohickies, these soft, curly-tentacled jellyfish are more often hugged than used for drying!

Bottom Panel:

  • Round 1: Make a magic circle, work 8 sc into it. Join. (8 sts)
  • Round 2: Ch 1, 2 sc in each st around. Join. (16 sts)
  • Round 3: Ch 1, 1 sc in next, 2 sc in next, repeat around. Join. (24 sts)
  • Round 4: Ch 1, 1 sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next, repeat around. Join. (32 sts)
  • Round 5: Ch 3 (not counted as stitch), 1 dc in next 3 sts, 2 dc in next, repeat around. Join. (40 sts)
  • Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. This panel should match the head (40 sts around).

Tentacles:

Each jellyfish has 8 freeform tentacles of varied length and texture.

  • Chain between 30 and 70 stitches.
  • Choose either sc or hdc and work 2 or 3 stitches into each chain across.
    • For sc: start in 2nd ch from hook
    • For hdc: start in 3rd ch from hook
  • The more stitches you place per chain, the curlier the tentacle will be. Stick with a stitch pattern long enough to form a good curl.
  • Fasten off and leave a tail for attaching.

Assembly Instructions:

  • Step 1: Attach the safety eyes between Rounds 12 and 13 on the head, about 8 stitches apart.
  • Step 2: Use embroidery thread to stitch a simple smile between the eyes.
  • Step 3: Attach tentacles to the bottom panel using both yarn tails. Pull the tails through stitch spaces and tie securely. Hide the ends inside the jellyfish.
  • Step 4: Align the bottom panel with the head. Using the long tail from the panel, insert your hook through one stitch on the head and the corresponding stitch on the panel. Pull up a loop and ch 1 to begin.
  • Step 5: Work 1 sc through both layers (4 loops total) around the edge.
  • Step 6: Before closing, stuff firmly with fiberfill. Then continue working sc around. Join with sl st to finish. Weave in ends.
  • Optional: Add a loop at the top for hanging.

Safety Note:

Long tentacles may pose a strangulation hazard. Always supervise children during play and do not allow sleeping with the toy.

For best results, stuff the head firmly, use tight stitches, and avoid overloading with heavy tentacles to prevent sagging.
