Overview of Construction
The bag consists of four main parts: the Front Panel, Back Panel with attached Flap, and the Sides & Bottom Stripe. It’s worked flat and then assembled with continuous joining. Optional components include a raffia belt and a crossbody handle.
Front Panel
- Ch 40. Work the setup row into the back bumps of the chain.
- Rows 2-30: Alternate between WS and RS rows using a modified Camel Stitch. Work into the back loops on WS and into the right legs of the “v” stitches on RS.
- Row 31: Join a second strand of raffia and crochet holding two strands together for added firmness.
- Steam block into a flat rectangle.
Back Panel
- Repeat the Front Panel instructions through Row 30.
- Row 31: Crochet as normal (no second strand).
- Steam block flat.
Flap (Attached to Back Panel)
- Begin the flap from Row 31 of the Back Panel, working from the center outwards.
- Row 1-25: Increase stitches every RS row to form a semicircle.
- Rows 26-27: Join a second raffia strand for added stiffness.
- Steam block the flap to shape.
Sides & Bottom (One Continuous Stripe)
Start from the upper-right corner of the WS of the Back Panel. Work in sections:
- Right Side (Rows 1-32): Connect to rows of the Front and Back Panels.
- Rows 4-12: Include a belt opening unless you’re making a clutch or crossbody.
- Bottom (Rows 1-40): Connects the base chains of both panels.
- Left Side (Rows 1-32): Join to remaining edges.
- Rows 21-29: Include a second belt opening if desired.
Clutch or Crossbody Version: Skip belt opening rows and work solid rows instead.
Finishing Touches
- Seaming: Weave in ends securely.
- Magnetic Clasp: Sew one side to the inside (WS) of the flap near the curved edge, and the other on the center front panel (RS).
- Blocking: Steam the entire bag with a towel inside to shape. Form crisp angles and let it dry completely. Fold the flap slightly inward to ease closing.
Optional Decorative Stitching
For added structure, create a chain stitch seam using two strands of raffia:
- Along the seam between the flap and the back
- Around both side panels (including belt opening edges, if used)
This step adds polish and extra stiffness to your bag.
