Diamond Filet Blanket Pattern

Diamond Filet Blanket

This diamond filet blanket uses double crochet and chain spaces. These form a row of open diamonds. Solid parts frame each shape and help it stand out.

Work the blanket in one piece. Then add a plain border to the edge. The same eight rows repeat through the blanket. Once you learn the steps, they are easy to follow.

Choose smooth yarn in one shade. This helps the spaces show well. Change the width or length to make a throw that fits.

Pattern Details

  • Skill level: Confident beginner.
  • Finished size: About 50 × 57 inches, including the border, at the stated gauge.
  • Yarn: About 1,800–2,200 yards of smooth worsted weight yarn. Your yarn use may vary.
  • Hook: 5 mm, or the size needed to meet gauge.
  • Other tools: Scissors, yarn needle, and stitch markers.
  • Gauge: 12 stitch positions × 7 rows = 4 inches in the filet pattern. Each skipped stitch beneath a chain space counts as one stitch position. Measure after washing and drying the swatch flat.

Abbreviations (US Terms)

  • ch: Chain.
  • dc: Double crochet.
  • sc: Single crochet.
  • sl st: Slip stitch.
  • st / sts: Stitch / stitches.
  • sp: Space.
  • sk: Skip.
  • rep: Repeat.

Filet Blocks

Each block covers three stitch positions. One dc at the start of the row forms the first edge.

Solid block: Work 1 dc in each of the next 3 stitch positions.

  • Over a solid block, dc in the next 3 dc.
  • Over an open block, work 2 dc into the ch-2 sp, then 1 dc in the next dc.

Open block: Ch 2, skip the next 2 stitch positions, then dc in the next dc.

  • Over a solid block, ch 2, sk the next 2 dc, then dc in the next dc.
  • Over an open block, ch 2, skip the ch-2 sp, then dc in the next dc.

Pattern Notes

  • Work back and forth in rows.
  • Turn at the end of each row.
  • The turning ch-3 counts as the first dc.
  • Each row has 48 blocks, plus the first edge dc.
  • Each row spans 145 stitch positions, including chains and dc.
  • Six groups of eight blocks form the width.
  • Count blocks from the start of the row you are working.
  • Work the last dc into the top of the turning ch-3.
  • Keep chains loose enough for the open blocks to lie flat.
  • Mark every eighth block while you learn the repeat.
  • The written instructions are newly composed. The filet stitches and diamond shapes are standard crochet techniques.

Pattern Instructions

Step 1: Make the Starting Chain

  • Ch 147 loosely.
  • Use a larger hook for this chain if it feels tight. Switch back to your main hook for Row 1.

Step 2: Work the Base Row

  • Row 1: Dc in the fourth ch from the hook. Dc in each ch to the end. Turn.
  • The three skipped chains count as the first dc.
  • Count: 145 dc, including the starting ch-3.

Step 3: Start the Diamond Pattern

For Rows 2–9, begin with ch 3. This counts as the first edge dc.

Work each bracketed group six times across the row. Each group has eight blocks. Turn at the end.

Row 2: Ch 3.
[Work 3 solid blocks, 2 open blocks, 3 solid blocks] six times. Turn.

Row 3: Ch 3.
[Work 2 solid blocks, 1 open block, 2 solid blocks, 1 open block, 2 solid blocks] six times. Turn.

Row 4: Ch 3.
[Work 1 solid block, 1 open block, 4 solid blocks, 1 open block, 1 solid block] six times. Turn.

Row 5: Ch 3.
[Work 1 open block, 6 solid blocks, 1 open block] six times. Turn.

Row 6: Ch 3.
[Work 1 solid block, 1 open block, 4 solid blocks, 1 open block, 1 solid block] six times. Turn.

Row 7: Ch 3.
[Work 2 solid blocks, 1 open block, 2 solid blocks, 1 open block, 2 solid blocks] six times. Turn.

Row 8: Ch 3.
[Work 3 solid blocks, 2 open blocks, 3 solid blocks] six times. Turn.

Row 9: Ch 3. Work 48 solid blocks across. Turn.

Check: Each row must have 48 blocks and the first edge dc.

Step 4: Build the Blanket

Rep Rows 2–9 eleven more times.

You will have:

  • 12 full diamond repeats in height.
  • 97 rows in total, including the base row.

Finish after Row 9 of the last repeat. Do not fasten off.

Step 5: Add the Border

Rnd 1:

  1. Ch 1. This does not count as a st.
  2. Work 1 sc in each st across the top edge.
  3. Work 3 sc in the corner st.
  4. Work about 2 sc around each row end down the side.
  5. Work 3 sc in the bottom corner.
  6. Work 1 sc in each starting-chain position across the bottom.
  7. Work 3 sc in the next corner.
  8. Work about 2 sc around each row end up the last side.
  9. Complete the first corner with 2 more sc in the same place as the first sc.
  10. Sl st in the first sc to join.

Count each corner only once. Add or remove side stitches as needed so the edge lies flat.

Rnd 2: Ch 1. Sc in each st around, with 3 sc in the center st of each corner group. Sl st in the first sc.

Rnd 3: Rep Rnd 2. Fasten off.

Step 6: Finish the Blanket

  1. Weave in all yarn ends.
  2. Wash the blanket as directed on the yarn label.
  3. Lay it flat and ease it into shape.
  4. Smooth the open diamonds without pulling them out of shape.
  5. Let the blanket dry fully.

Change the Size

To change the width: Use a starting chain that is a multiple of 24, plus 3.

Each set of 24 chains adds one eight-block group.

  • Ch 99: Four groups; 97 stitch positions.
  • Ch 123: Five groups; 121 stitch positions.
  • Ch 147: Six groups; 145 stitch positions.
  • Ch 171: Seven groups; 169 stitch positions.

Work each bracketed row group as many times as needed for your chosen width.

To change the length: Add or remove full repeats of Rows 2–9. Finish after Row 9 so the top edge is solid.
