Stitching Instructions for Making the Caron Hatosaurus Free Pattern:

Base of the Hat (MC)

  • Crown:
    • Round 1: Start with a magic circle, ch 1 (does not count as a st). Work 6 sc into the circle. Pull tight to close the loop. Place a stitch marker in the first sc. (6 sts)
    • Round 2: Inc in each st around (2 sc in each st). Move the stitch marker to the first st of each new round. (12 sts)
    • Round 3: 1 sc in the next st, inc in the following st; repeat from to around. (18 sts)
    • Round 4: 1 sc in each of the next 2 sts, inc in the following st; repeat from to around. (24 sts)
    • Continue this increasing pattern, adding one more sc before each inc in every round (X sc, inc, where X = the round number minus 2), until the diameter of the hat matches the child’s head size.
  • Sides:
    • Once the desired crown diameter is reached, stop increasing and work even in sc (1 sc in each st) for 10–12 rounds, or until the hat height fits the child size.

Hatosaurus Spikes (CA)

  • Row 1: Ch 7. Starting in the 2nd ch from the hook, work 1 sc in each ch. (6 sts)
  • Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Work 1 dec over the first 2 sts, 1 sc in each remaining st. (5 sts)
  • Row 3: Ch 1, turn. Work 1 dec over the first 2 sts, 1 sc in each remaining st. (4 sts)
  • Repeat this pattern until 1 st remains. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.
  • Make 8–10 spikes, depending on the size of the hat and desired appearance.

Eyes (CB and Black)

  • Round 1 (CB): With CB, ch 4. Sl st into the first ch to form a ring. Ch 1, then work 6 sc into the ring. Sl st to the first sc to close. (6 sts)
  • Round 2 (CB): Ch 1. Work 2 sc in each st around. Sl st to the first st. (12 sts)
  • Switch to black. Round 3 (Black): Work 1 sc in each st around. Sl st to the first st. Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.
  • Make 2 eyes and attach them to the hat using the black yarn.

Nostrils (Black)

  • Round 1: Ch 2. Work 4 sc into the 2nd ch from the hook. Sl st to the first st to close.
  • Fasten off, leaving a tail for sewing.
  • Make 2 nostrils and attach them symmetrically to the front of the hat beneath the eyes.

Assembly

  • Attach Spikes: Using the long tails left on the spikes, sew them along the centerline of the hat, starting from the crown and extending to the back. Place the spikes evenly, leaving about 1 row of sts between each. Use sl sts or overhand stitches for secure attachment.
  • Attach Eyes: Position the eyes on the front of the hat, slightly apart. Sew them in place using the tail ends, securing the edges with overhand stitches.
  • Attach Nostrils: Sew the nostrils beneath the eyes, approximately 1–2 rows below and centered on the front.
  • Weave in Ends: Using a tapestry needle, weave in all loose ends to give a clean finish.

By following these detailed instructions, you’ll create a sturdy and fun dinosaur hat that kids will adore!
