A-Line Skirt Pattern

Pattern Description:

This pattern creates a simple, texturally elegant Crochet A-Line Skirt called “Peach Fuzz”. It is made primarily using the half double crochet (hdc) stitch for the body, with a border featuring the Suzzette stitch.

The skirt is constructed with a comfortable 1-inch elastic waistband and is worked in the round.

Materials Needed & Measurements:

Materials Needed

  • Elastic: 1″ Elastic cut to your waist size. If rescuing elastic from a garment, hold the ends together and sew with a 5/8″ seam allowance. The skirt uses an elastic waistband because it helps the skirt stay up.
  • Yarn: Vidalana Yarn from Knitcrate in Tiger Lily (DK Weight).
  • Hook: 4mm hook.
  • Contrasting Colour: 20 g (optional).
  • Tools: Stitch marker, Pair of scissors, Darning needle.

Sizing & Measurements

The sizing of this skirt is based primarily on your waist measurements.

Size DesignationTo Fit Waist Measurement (Inches)To Fit Waist Measurement (cm)
Small (S)26-27 inches67-68.5 cm
Medium (M)28-30 inches71-76 cm
Large (L)32-34 inches81.5-86.5 cm
X-Large (XL)35-37 inches91-96 cm

Note on Fit: Because elastic is used as a waistband, the finished skirt should stretch comfortably 3-4 inches more than the size it was cut to. For example, the maker’s specific elastic was 27″ around and stretched comfortably to 31″ around the waist.

Gauge: The gauge is 12 rows, 17 stitches in 4″ or 10cm when working in hdc with a 4mm furls crochet hook.

Instructions for Making the A-Line Skirt Pattern:

Elastic Waistband Preparation

The skirt uses an elastic waistband, as this helps the skirt stay up.

  • Cut the Elastic: Cut a piece of 1″ elastic to fit around your waist.
  • Sew Ends: If the elastic is not being rescued from an existing garment, hold the ends together and sew them using a 5/8″ seam allowance.
  • Gauge and Sizing: The sizing is based on waist measurements: S (26-27″), M (28-30″), L (32-34″), XL (35-37″). Because of the elastic, the finished skirt should stretch comfortably 3-4″ more than the size it was cut to (e.g., a 27″ elastic stretches to 31″). The gauge for the hdc body is 12 rows, 17 stitches in 4″ or 10cm, using a 4mm hook.

Waistband Band Construction

This band is crocheted to cover the elastic.

  • Starting Chain: Grab your yarn, make a slip knot leaving a long tail to sew the ends later, and chain (ch) 9.
  • R1: Make 1 single crochet (sc) in the second chain from the hook. Sc in the remaining chains. This should yield 8 sc. Chain 1 and turn.
  • R2 – Length Rows: Work 1 sc in each sc for the number of rows corresponding to your size: 134 (152, 168, 186, 202) rows. Chain 1 and turn.
  • Joining: Fold the crocheted piece over the elastic (covering the long or “raw edges” of the crochet). Join the folded edges with the following number of single crochets: 134 (152, 168, 186, 202) sc.
  • Preparation for Skirt Body: Slip stitch to the first sc to join, then chain 2, and place a stitch marker. You can use the long tail to sew the gap over the elastic shut now or wait until the skirt is finished. It is recommended to work in the round using a stitch marker to avoid a traveling seam.
