Step-by-Step Instructions for Making the Athelas Coaster Pattern:
Round 1:
- Start with a magic ring (MR). If you’re unfamiliar with a magic ring, it’s a loop created by wrapping the yarn around your fingers, then pulling the yarn through to form a loop that can be tightened.
- CH 1 (this does not count as a stitch).
- Make 8 Puff ST inside the magic ring.
- To create a Puff ST: Yarn over, insert your hook into the ring, yarn over again, and pull up a long loop (3 loops on the hook). Yarn over and insert the hook into the same ring, yarn over, and pull up another loop (repeat this until you have 9 loops on your hook). Yarn over and pull through all 9 loops, then chain 1 to close the puff.
- Join with a SLST to the first loop of the first Puff ST to complete the round.
Round 2:
- CH 1 to begin (does not count as a stitch).
- HDC in the first loop of the first Puff ST.
- Insert your hook into the first loop of the Puff ST and yarn over to complete a half double crochet.
- HDC in the second loop of the first Puff ST.
- FPHDC around the same Puff ST.
- To do this, yarn over and insert the hook around the post of the Puff ST from front to back, then yarn over and complete a half double crochet.
- Repeat from to around:
- For each subsequent Puff ST, work:
- HDC in the first loop of the Puff ST,
- HDC in the second loop of the Puff ST,
- FPHDC around the same Puff ST.
- For each subsequent Puff ST, work:
- Join with a SLST to the first HDC (not the CH 1).
Round 3:
- CH 2 (does not count as a stitch).
- DC in the same ST as the CH 2 (this is the first DC stitch of the round).
- CH 2, then skip 1 stitch (this is the HDC from the previous round).
- DC in the next ST (this is a FPHDC from the previous round).
- Repeat from to around:
- Work 1 DC in the next stitch (HDC from the previous round),
- CH 2, skip 1 stitch (HDC),
- 1 DC in the next stitch (FPHDC from previous round).
- Join with SLST to the first DC (not the CH 2).
Round 4:
- SLST to the second loop of the Puff ST.
- SLST to the CH 2 space created by the previous round.
- CH 1 to begin this round.
- Work Puff STs and FPDCs around the CH 2 space:
- 1 Puff ST,
- CH 1,
- 1 Puff ST in the CH 2 space,
- 1 FPDC around the 2 DC from the previous round (these two DCs were made in the previous round).
- Repeat from to around:
- 1 Puff ST,
- CH 1,
- 1 Puff ST in the CH 2 space,
- 1 FPDC around the 2 DC from the previous round.
- Join with SLST to the first loop of the first Puff ST.
Round 5:
- SLST to the CH 1 space between the Puff STs.
- CH 3, then work 6 DC in the same space.
- This creates a cluster of DCs in the CH 1 space.
- Skip the next Puff ST and work 1 FPSC (front post single crochet) around the FPDC from the previous round.
- Skip the next Puff ST.
- Repeat from to around:
- 7 DC in the next CH 1 space between the Puff STs,
- Skip the next Puff ST,
- 1 FPSC around the FPDC from the previous round.
- Join with SLST to the top of the CH 3.
Finish:
- Fasten off the yarn and weave in all ends using a yarn needle.
Final Notes:
- As you work through these rounds, the coaster will begin to take shape with beautiful texture from the puff stitches, front post stitches, and double crochet clusters.
- Feel free to experiment with different colors for each round to create a striped or multi-colored coaster.
