Back-to-School Teacher's Treat Pattern

Materials Needed & Measurement:

  • Yarn: Worsted Weight yarn (Red, Ivory, Green, and small strand of Black)
  • Hook Size: US G/4.00 mm crochet hook
  • 3/4″ button (for pouch)
  • Needle for embroidery

Stitching Abbreviations:

  • beg: beginning
  • ch: chain
  • dc: double crochet
  • hdc: half double crochet
  • sc: single crochet
  • Sc2tog: single crochet 2 together
  • sl st: slip stitch
  • st(s): stitch(es)

Stitching Instructions for Making Back-to-School Teacher’s Treat Pattern:

Apple Coasters:

Round 1:

  • Start with Ivory yarn.
  • Make a Magic Circle, then ch1 to begin.
  • In the center of the circle, work 8 sc (single crochet).
  • Pull the loose end of the Magic Circle to close it.
  • Do not join the round (8 sc).

Round 2:

  • Starting with the first sc of the previous round, work 2sc into each stitch around.
  • You should have a total of 16 sc.
  • Do not join the round.

Round 3:

Round 5:

  • Join with a sl st to the next stitch.

Round 6:

  • Sl st into the next 2 stitches.
  • Work sc in the next stitch.
  • Then work the following sequence: [sc, hdc] in the next stitch, 2hdc in the next stitch, hdc in each of the next 2 stitches, [hdc, sc] in the next stitch, and sc in the next 9 stitches.
  • hdc in the next stitch, [hdc, sc] in the next stitch, then sl st to finish the first half of the apple.

Round 7 (Second half of the apple):

  • Sl st in the next stitch.
  • Work [sc, hdc] in the next stitch, hdc in the next stitch, sc in the next 9 stitches.
  • [sc, hdc] in the next stitch, hdc in each of the next 2 stitches, 2hdc in the next stitch, [hdc, sc] in the next stitch, sc in the next stitch, and sl st in the last 2 stitches.
  • This completes the second half of the apple.

Round 7 (Continued):

  • Join Red yarn and work sc2tog (single crochet 2 together).
  • Sc in the next 5 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch.
  • Sc in the next 13 stitches, 2sc in the next stitch, sc in the next stitch, sc2tog (this should be the two center stitches at the bottom of the apple).
  • Sc, 2sc in the next stitch, sc in the next 13 stitches.
  • 2sc in the next stitch, sc in the next 5 stitches, and sc2tog. Join with sl st to the first sc of the round.
  • Fasten off.

Apple Leaf:

  • With Green yarn, ch8 to begin.
  • In the 4th stitch from the hook, work 3dc (double crochet).
  • Dc in the next 2 stitches, then sc in the next stitch.
  • In the last ch stitch, work: [sc, ch2, sl st in the 2nd ch from the hook, sc].
  • Work around the other side of the beginning chain and repeat: sc in the next stitch, dc in the next 2 stitches, and 3dc in the last stitch.
  • Ch3 and sl st into the same stitch to finish the leaf shape.
  • Ch1 and sl st into the center top stitch of the apple.
  • Ch9, then sl st into the same stitch – this will create a loop. Fasten off.

Apple Seeds Embroidery:

  • Using the small strand of Black yarn, embroider small seeds in the center of the apple, as shown in the picture.

Making the Treat Pocket:

  • Make one sliced apple (with a leaf) and one solid apple (without the leaf).
  • With the wrong sides together, match the stitches of both apples.
  • Join the apples together by inserting your yarn in the 6th stitch to the left of the center top of the apple and using sl st or sc to attach them.
  • When you reach the 6th stitch before the center top of the apple, stop and fasten off.
  • Sew the button onto the solid apple side and use the loop from the leaf as a buttonhole to close the treat pocket.
