Stitching Rounds for Athena Neckwarmer Free Pattern:

Foundation Round

  • ch 80 (or desired length) – This number should create a snug but comfortable fit around the neck. For a looser fit, increase the starting chain count in multiples of 2.
  • Being careful not to twist the chain, sl st into the first ch to form a ring. This creates a smooth loop to work into for the following rounds.

Round 1: Base Round

  • ch 1 to start the round (does not count as a stitch here), then sc in each st around. Working single crochets into each chain will help set a sturdy base for the neckwarmer and help prevent it from stretching out of shape.
  • At the end of the round, sl st into the first sc to join. You should now have the same number of stitches as the starting chain (80 sc in this example).

Round 2: Texture Setup

  1. ch 2 (counts as first hdc here), then hdc in each st around. Half double crochets give a bit of height and texture to this round while keeping the fabric solid and warm.
  2. sl st into the top of the starting ch-2 to join. This round should feel slightly thicker than the base round, and it’s the beginning of the neckwarmer’s textured pattern.

Round 3: Pattern Round

  • ch 3 (counts as first dc), dc in the next st. These first two dc stitches create the start of a repeating pattern.
  • Skip 1 st, then place 2 dc in the next st. The skip 1 and 2 dc pattern will create a subtle openwork effect, adding texture and interest without too much exposure to cold.
  • Continue the pattern from to around the entire round. You’ll be alternating between skipping a stitch and placing two dc in the next stitch to achieve a nice rhythm in the fabric.
  • At the end of the round, sl st to the top of the starting ch-3 to join.

Repeat Rounds: Building the Pattern

  • Repeat Rounds 2 and 3 until the neckwarmer reaches your desired height.
    • Texture Variation: For extra warmth, try repeating Round 2 more often than Round 3.
    • Airier Look: If you want a lighter neckwarmer, add ch 1 between each 2 dc set in Round 3. This creates additional spacing and an airy texture.

This repetition will allow the fabric to build up with a mix of solid and openwork rounds, giving it an attractive balance of structure and drape.

Final Round: Finishing Edge

  • To finish, ch 1, and sc in each st around. Single crochets give a clean, polished edge to the neckwarmer and help prevent any curling at the top.
  • sl st into the first sc and fasten off securely. This closes the round neatly and completes the piece.
  • Weave in all loose ends with a tapestry needle to hide them within the fabric and ensure they don’t unravel with wear.
