Instructions for Crochet Easy Dog Coat Pattern:
Starting the Body
- Begin by creating the base chain (ch) to the required length for your dog’s size (refer to pattern sizing).
- Row 1: sc in the 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across; ch 1, turn.
- Rows 2-10 (or as needed for body length): sc in each st across; ch 1, turn at the end of each row.
- This creates the main body panel of the coat. Adjust the number of rows based on the length needed for your dog.
Creating the Leg Openings
- Next Row: sc across to the point where the first leg opening will start (following pattern measurements).
- First Leg Opening: ch the number of stitches required to skip the leg opening space; skip the corresponding number of sts below and then continue with sc in each remaining st across the row.
- Turn and repeat for the next row, sc in each st across, including into the ch sts from the previous row. This forms a smooth opening for the leg.
- Second Leg Opening: Continue in the same manner for the second leg opening, skipping the appropriate sts and working into the chain stitches in the next row to maintain shape.
Edging for Legs
- With the right side (RS) facing, join yarn with a sl st around one leg opening.
- Leg Opening Rnd: ch 1, sc evenly around the leg opening to create a smooth edge.
- sl st to join; fasten off, and repeat for the second leg opening.
- Tip: Ensure sc sts are spaced evenly to avoid gaps and maintain a clean edge.
Joining the Body
- Fold the coat with the wrong side (WS) facing out, aligning the edges of the body section.
- Use a yarn needle to whip stitch along the back seam of the coat, joining the two edges to form a tube-like shape.
- Fasten off and weave in ends to secure. This seam forms the back of the coat and gives it structure.
Adding the Belly Band
- With RS facing, join yarn to the bottom edge of the coat where the belly section will start.
- Belly Band Row 1: ch 1, sc evenly along the edge to create the first row of the belly band.
- Continue Rows: ch 1, turn, sc in each st across. Repeat these rows until the belly band reaches the desired length to comfortably cover the belly.
- Fasten off and weave in any loose ends for a clean finish.
Finishing with Neck and Leg Bands
- For the neck opening: attach yarn with a sl st at any point around the neck.
- Neck Band Rnd 1: ch 1, sc evenly around the neck opening, sl st to join.
- Rnds 2-4: ch 1, work sc in BLO around, sl st to join each round. This creates a ribbed, stretchy collar. Repeat as needed to reach desired collar height.
- For the leg bands: Repeat similar steps around each leg opening.
- Attach yarn with sl st, ch 1, sc evenly around the leg opening in BLO to create a stretchy edge; sl st to join each round.
Final Details
- After all sections are complete, turn the coat RS out.
- Weave in any remaining loose ends with a yarn needle, ensuring that all ends are securely tucked away.
- Slip the coat onto your dog, adjusting the fit as needed. Make sure the leg openings and belly band sit comfortably, allowing movement without restriction.
