Stitching Instructions for Making the Barcelona Summer Crocheted Kimono Cardigan Pattern:
Cross Double Crochet Edging
- Foundation Chain: Ch (52 for XS/S, 66 for M/L). This forms the base for the first rectangle.
- Row 1:
- Dc in the 4th ch from hook (this counts as the first dc).
- Sk next ch, dc in next ch, then dc in the skipped ch. This forms a crossed dc.
- Repeat crossed dc stitches across the row.
- You should have (50 dc for XS/S, 64 dc for M/L) at the end of the row.
- Row 2:
- Ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), turn your work.
- Dc in each st across the row. This creates a solid row of double crochets.
- (50 dc for XS/S, 64 dc for M/L)
- Row 3:
- Ch 3, turn.
- Dc in next st (this is the second st from the edge).
- Sk next st, dc in next st, then dc in the skipped st to create crossed dc.
- Repeat crossed dc across the row.
- (50 dc for XS/S, 64 dc for M/L)
- Row 4:
- Ch 3, turn.
- Dc in each st across the row. This row balances the texture from the previous row of crossed dc.
- (50 dc for XS/S, 64 dc for M/L)
Single Mesh Rows (Bottom Portion)
- Row 5:
- Ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and ch 1), turn.
- Sk next st, dc in following st.
- Ch 1, sk next st, dc in the next st. Repeat from * across.
- At the end of the row, make a final ch 1, then dc into the top of the turning ch from the previous row.
- (51 sts for XS/S, 65 sts for M/L)
- Row 6:
- Ch 3, turn.
- Dc in the ch sp below, dc in the next dc. Repeat from * across the row.
- This row fills in the gaps from Row 5, creating a mesh pattern.
- (51 dc for XS/S, 65 dc for M/L)
- Rows 7 – 18: Repeat Rows 5 & 6 six more times. This builds the bottom portion of the kimono with a textured mesh design.
Double Mesh Rows (Bottom Portion)
- Row 19:
- Ch 4 (counts as 1 dc and ch 1), turn.
- Sk next st, dc in following st.
- Ch 1, sk next st, dc in the next st. Repeat from * across.
- Final dc into the turning ch from the previous row.
- This row introduces a more open mesh design.
- Row 20: Repeat Row 19 to create a continuous double mesh effect.
- Row 21:
- Ch 3, turn.
- Dc in each st across the row. This row solidifies the mesh pattern and maintains structure.
- (51 dc for XS/S, 65 dc for M/L)
- Repeat Rows 19-21:

- M/L: 52” in length
- Tie off and weave in ends.
- Continue this pattern until the rectangle measures approximately:
Making the Second Rectangle
- Repeat the entire pattern to create a second rectangle. Ensure both rectangles are of the same size.
Assembly Instructions
- Seaming the Back:
- Lay the two rectangles side by side, long edges together.
- Use a tapestry needle and matching yarn to seam them together with a whip stitch seam from the bottom up to the center back.
- This forms the back seam of the kimono.
- Tie off and weave in ends securely.
- Creating Armholes and Side Seams:
- Fold the joined rectangles in half to form the kimono shape.
- Seam up each side, leaving approximately 9-10” unsewn at the top for arm openings.
- Ensure the armholes are even on both sides.
- Tie off and weave in ends.
Customization Tips:
- When you want a longer kimono, simply repeat the stitch patterns and add more rows to each rectangle.
- Measure yourself to ensure the desired length and fit before completing the final rows.
