Stitching Instructions for Making the Bernat Filet Crochet Dinosaur Baby Blanket Pattern:

Foundation Chain (Start)

  • Ch a multiple of 6 plus 4 to create the foundation chain. For a blanket of approximately 36″ wide, use 124 ch (you can adjust the number based on your gauge and desired width).
  • Row 1:
    • Ch 3 (counts as the first dc).
    • In the 4th ch from the hook, work 1 dc. This counts as 2 dc (one from the chain and one from the next dc stitch).
    • Ch 1, skip 1 ch, and work 1 dc into the next ch. Repeat from * across the row until you reach the end.
      • Your row will consist of a series of dc stitches with ch-1 spaces between them.
    • Turn your work to start the next row.
  • Row 2:
    • Ch 3 (this counts as 1 dc), then dc into the next dc of the previous row.
    • Ch 1, then skip the next ch-1 space, and work 1 dc into the next dc stitch. Repeat from * to the end of the row.
      • The result should be a combination of dc stitches with ch-1 spaces between them.
    • Turn your work.
  • Row 3:
    • Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), then work 1 dc into the next dc of the previous row.
    • Ch 1, then skip the next ch-1 space, and work 1 dc into the next dc stitch. Continue this pattern across the row.
    • Turn your work.
  • Rows 4 & 5:
    • Repeat Row 2 and Row 3 for the next rows to continue building the grid-like filet crochet pattern, where you have alternating dc stitches and ch-1 spaces.

Creating the Dinosaur Motif Section:

  • Follow the filet crochet chart for the dinosaur design. The chart will guide you in creating the motif using open and filled squares.
    • Filled square: Represents a block of stitches that form a solid square in the pattern. Work 1 dc in each ch-1 space and dc from the previous row.
    • Open square: Represents a space between the filled squares. Work 1 ch, then **skip the next dc and continue with the next dc to leave a space.
  • Work through the dinosaur motif section row by row, following the pattern on the chart.
    • For each open square (empty space), you’ll chain 1 (ch 1), skip a dc, and then work a dc in the next dc.
    • For each filled square, work 1 dc in each dc or ch-1 space below, essentially filling it in with dc stitches.

Continuing the Filet Pattern:

  • After completing the dinosaur design, return to the grid-like filet pattern from the beginning.
  • Continue with 5 more rows of the filet pattern, repeating Row 2 and Row 3 to finish the blanket body.

Border (Optional):

  • Once the body of the blanket is complete, attach yarn to one of the blanket’s corners using a sl st.
  • Work sc stitches evenly along the edges of the blanket to create a neat border. For each corner, work 3 sc to turn the corner smoothly.
  • For a decorative edge: Create a scalloped border by working the following pattern around the entire blanket:
    • (Skip 1 sc stitch, then work 5 dc stitches into the next sc stitch, skip 1 sc, and sl st into the next sc)
    • Repeat this pattern around the entire edge to form the scallops.
  • Fasten off and weave in all loose ends using a tapestry needle.

Blocking:

  • After finishing the blanket, block the blanket to the final size (approximately 36″ x 36″). This will help the filet pattern and dinosaur design to lay flat and even out any unevenness in the stitches.

Enjoy Your Blanket!
