Amigurumi Spring Chicks

Materials Needed & Measurements:

  • Sport weight yarn:
    • Yellow (for the body and wings)
    • Orange (for the beak and feet)
    • Green (for the frog hat) or White (for the bunny hat)
    • Pink (for optional blush detail)
  • Crochet Hook: 2.5 mm (or appropriate size for sport weight yarn)
  • Fiberfill: For stuffing the chick’s body
  • Safety Eyes: 8mm safety eyes (or flat back eyes)
  • Tapestry Needle: For sewing pieces together
  • Small amount of pink felt (optional): For adding blush to the chick’s cheeks

Finished Measurements:

  • Height: Approximately 2.5 to 3 inches (without a hat)
  • With a frog or bunny hat: Height increases to approximately 3.5 to 4.5 inches

Abbreviations:

  • ch = chain
  • sc = single crochet
  • inc = increase (2 sc in the same stitch)
  • dec = decrease (single crochet 2 stitches together)
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • FO = fasten off
  • st(s) = stitch(es)

Stitching Instructions for Making Amigurumi Spring Chicks Pattern:

Body:

Start with yellow yarn.

  • Round 1: Make a magic ring and sc 6 into the ring (6 sts).
  • Round 2: Inc in each stitch around (12 sts).
  • Round 3: (Sc 1, inc) around (18 sts).
  • Round 4: (Sc 2, inc) around (24 sts).
  • Rounds 5-10: Sc in each stitch around (24 sts).
  • Round 11: (Sc 2, dec) around (18 sts).
  • Round 12: (Sc 1, dec) around (12 sts).
  • Round 13: Dec around (6 sts).

Stuff the chick’s body with fiberfill as you go.

FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Wings (Make 2):

Start with yellow yarn.

  • Round 1: Ch 2, 3 sc in the second ch from the hook (3 sts).
  • Round 2: Inc in each stitch (6 sts).
  • Round 3: Sc 1, inc, sc 1, inc (8 sts).
  • FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Sew the wings to either side of the chick’s body.

Beak (Orange):

  • Round 1: Make a magic ring and sc 3 into the ring (3 sts).
  • Round 2: Inc in each stitch around (6 sts).
  • FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Sew the beak onto the chick’s face.

Feet (Make 2):

Start with orange yarn.

  • Round 1: Ch 2, 3 sc in the second ch from the hook (3 sts).
  • Round 2: Inc in each stitch around (6 sts).
  • FO, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Sew the feet to the bottom of the chick.

Safety Eyes:

Place the 8mm safety eyes on the chick’s face, just above the beak. Secure them in place.

Optional Blush (Pink Felt):

Cut small circles of pink felt and sew them lightly to the cheeks of the chick for a cute blush effect.

Optional Hats:

You can make a frog or bunny hat to add an adorable accessory to your chick!

Frog Hat:

Start with green yarn.

  • Round 1: Make a magic ring and sc 6 into the ring (6 sts).
  • Round 2: Inc in each stitch around (12 sts).
  • Round 3: (Sc 1, inc) around (18 sts).
  • Round 4: (Sc 2, inc) around (24 sts).
  • Rounds 5-6: Sc in each stitch around (24 sts).
  • Round 7: (Sc 2, dec) around (18 sts).
  • Round 8: (Sc 1, dec) around (12 sts).
  • Round 9: Dec around (6 sts).

Sew the hat onto the chick’s head. You can also create small frog eyes from black yarn or felt to sew onto the top of the hat.

Bunny Hat:

Start with white yarn.

  • Round 1: Make a magic ring and sc 6 into the ring (6 sts).
  • Round 2: Inc in each stitch around (12 sts).
  • Round 3: (Sc 1, inc) around (18 sts).
  • Round 4: (Sc 2, inc) around (24 sts).
  • Rounds 5-6: Sc in each stitch around (24 sts).
  • Round 7: (Sc 2, dec) around (18 sts).
  • Round 8: (Sc 1, dec) around (12 sts).
  • Round 9: Dec around (6 sts).

To make bunny ears, chain 6, sc in the second chain from the hook, and sc in each chain to the end. Fold the ear into a slight curve and sew it onto the top of the hat.

Finishing:

  • Make sure all pieces are securely attached to the body.
  • Weave in all the loose ends using the tapestry needle.
  • Optionally, use a bit of blush (pink felt or yarn) on the chick’s cheeks for an extra touch of cuteness.
