Stitching Instructions for Making the Bernat Touch of Texture Crochet Blanket Pattern:

Foundation Chain:

  • Begin with a foundation chain that is a multiple of 6, plus 1 additional chain. For example, to create a blanket that is about 50″ wide, chain 181 (this is a multiple of 6, plus 1).
  • This chain will form the foundation of your blanket and should measure approximately the width you want.

Row 1 (Right Side):

  • Ch 1 to begin the first row.
  • Turn your work so the first stitch will be at the beginning of your chain.
  • Sc in the second ch from the hook, and then sc in each ch across the entire row.
    • This step helps create a solid base for the next rows. By working Sc into each chain, you’ll have a neat starting edge for the blanket.

Row 2 (Wrong Side):

  • Ch 1, and turn your work to begin the second row.
  • Sc in the first sc stitch, then continue working sc in each sc across the row.
    • This creates a simple and even foundation for the following textured rows.
  • By the end of this row, you should have one Sc in each stitch from the previous row.

Row 3 (Pattern Setup – Right Side):

  • Ch 1, and turn your work to begin the next row.
  • Sc in the first sc (the very first stitch after turning).
  • Then, Ch 1, skip the next sc, and Sc in the next sc.
    • Rep this sequence (Ch 1, skip 1, Sc in the next) across the entire row. Continue repeating this across the row until you are nearly at the end.
  • End the row with Sc in the last sc to maintain the edge.

Row 4 (Pattern Repeat – Wrong Side):

  • Ch 1, and turn your work to begin the next row.
  • In this row, you will be working into the Ch-1 spaces from the previous row.
  • Sc in each Ch-1 space across the row, not into the sc stitches from the previous row, but into the Ch-1 spaces created by the previous row’s pattern.
  • Work Sc in each space across, until you reach the end.
  • When you reach the last stitch, work Sc in the final sc of the previous row.
    • This creates a smooth texture, where the sc stitches are separated by little spaces.

Repeat the Pattern:

  • Rep Rows 3 and 4:
    • For Row 3, continue with Ch 1, skip the next sc, and Sc in the next sc. This creates the open, textured pattern.
    • For Row 4, work Sc in each Ch-1 space from the previous row, continuing to build the texture.
  • Keep repeating Rows 3 and 4, alternating between the two rows, until your blanket reaches the desired length, approximately 60″. You will see the texture forming as you go along.

Finishing the Blanket:

  • Once the blanket reaches your desired length (about 60 inches long), Fasten off your yarn by cutting it and pulling the yarn tail through the final loop.
  • Weave in loose ends using a yarn needle to secure any loose yarn from where you started or ended the rows.
  • For a finished look, you may add a border around the edges:
    • Work Sc evenly around the entire perimeter of the blanket. For smooth corners, place 3 sc in each corner stitch to create a rounded edge.
