Bobble Stitch Pumpkins

Pattern Description:

Create beautiful, textured pumpkins with this fun and easy bobble stitch crochet pattern. The bobble stitches form raised ridges that mimic real pumpkin segments.

The pattern is worked flat as a long rectangle, alternating bobble stitch rows with single crochet rows to make the texture pop.

Instructions for Making the Bobble Stitch Pumpkins Pattern:

Pumpkin Body (Rectangle)

The pumpkin is worked flat as a rectangle. You’ll later seam it and gather the ends to form the pumpkin shape. Start with an even number of chains.

Sample Sizes:

  • Green Pumpkin: Chain 26 (25 stitches + 1 turning chain).
  • Orange Pumpkin: Chain 20 (19 stitches + 1 turning chain).
  • Row 1: Single crochet in the second chain from the hook and in each stitch across. Turn.
  • Row 2: Chain 1, single crochet in the first stitch. Bobble in next stitch, single crochet in next stitch. Repeat from * to end of row. Turn.
  • Row 3: Chain 1, single crochet in each stitch across. Turn.
  • Row 4: Chain 1, single crochet in each stitch across. Turn.
  • Row 5: Chain 1, single crochet in each stitch across. Turn.

Repeat Rows 2–5 until your piece reaches the desired size, ending on a Row 4. This ensures the piece begins and ends with two single crochet rows, giving a balanced texture when seamed.

Sample Row Counts:

  • Green Pumpkin: 48 rows (12 repeats of rows 2–5).
  • Orange Pumpkin: 56 rows (14 repeats of rows 2–5).

When finished, cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Assembly

  • 1. Seam the Sides
  • Fold the rectangle so the short ends meet. Using the long tail and yarn needle, sew the short edges together to form a tube.
  • 2. Cinch the Bottom
  • Using the same yarn tail, weave the needle in and out around the bottom edge of the tube. Pull tightly to gather the bottom closed. The bobble texture may prevent it from closing completely, but pull it as tight as possible. Stitch across the gathered area to secure it. Tie off and weave in the yarn end.
  • 3. Stuff and Cinch the Top
  • Cut a new length of yarn. Using a running stitch, weave around the top edge. Before pulling it closed, stuff the pumpkin with Polyfil to your desired firmness. Pull the yarn tight to close the top, leaving a small hole in the center. Secure the gathered edge and hide the yarn ends inside the pumpkin.
  • 4. Add the Stem
  • Insert a cinnamon stick, small dowel, or twig into the center opening to form the stem. Push it securely into the stuffing.

Customization Tips

  • For larger pumpkins, increase the starting chain and add more row repeats.
  • For smaller pumpkins, reduce both.
  • Mix and match yarn colors for a decorative fall display.
  • Add twine, ribbon, or faux leaves around the stem for extra charm.

Enjoy your cozy, handmade Bobble Stitch Pumpkins, perfect for autumn décor or gifts!
