Caron Crochet Waves Scarf

Pattern Description:

The Caron Crochet Waves Scarf is an eye-catching accessory made with simple stitches that create an elegant, flowing wave design.

By combining increases and decreases with double crochet, you form peaks and valleys across the fabric that give the scarf its rhythmic movement.

The gradual color changes in Caron Cakes yarn highlight the waves beautifully, making the project look complex while being surprisingly easy to work.

This one-skein project is perfect for beginners, great for travel, and versatile enough to customize in both width and length.

Most crocheters can complete this scarf in 6-8 hours. It’s an ideal weekend project.

Instructions for Making the Caron Crochet Waves Scarf Pattern

Foundation

Ch 245 (or any multiple of 14 + 3 to adjust length). This will produce a scarf approximately 62″ long.

Row 1

  • Dc in 4th ch from hook (this counts as 2 dc).
  • Dc in next 3 ch (5 dc total).
  • Sk 2 ch, dc in next 5 ch, ch 2, dc in next 5 ch.
  • Rep from until 7 ch remain.
  • Sk 2 ch, dc in last 5 ch. Turn.

You should see the start of a wave: a decrease where you skipped stitches and an increase where you added ch-2 between groups.

Row 2

  • Ch 3 (counts as dc).
  • Dc in next 4 sts (5 dc total).
  • Sk 2 sts, dc in next 5 sts, ch 2, dc in next 5 sts.
  • Rep from across until 7 sts remain.
  • Sk 2 sts, dc in last 5 sts. Turn.

Row 3 and Beyond

  • Rep Row 2 until scarf measures approx. 62″ or desired length.
  • Fasten off and cut yarn, leaving a tail for weaving in.

Finishing

  • Weave in ends with a tapestry needle.
  • Block scarf lightly to smooth edges and open up the wave design.
  • If you prefer a wider scarf, start with a longer foundation chain (multiple of 14 + 3). For a narrower scarf, reduce chains in the same multiple.

Tips for Success

  • Yarn Choice: Self-striping yarn like Caron Cakes enhances the wavy pattern without needing color changes. Solid colors will show texture more strongly, while variegated yarns will create a playful, patchwork look.
  • Consistent Tension: Keep your dc stitches even to maintain clean peaks and valleys. Uneven tension can make waves look distorted.
  • Customization: Add tassels or fringe to both ends for a fun finish. You can also work two skeins together for a wider wrap.
  • Portability: Since the repeat is easy to memorize, this is a great travel project.
