Stitching Instructions for Making Petrona Poncho Pattern:

Foundation Chain:

  • Ch 61 (if you want a larger or smaller poncho, adjust the chain to be a multiple of 8 + 1).
  • In the 3rd ch from the hook, hdc across all the remaining chains. You should have 59 hdc stitches.
  • Turn your work.

Building the Poncho Body:

  • Row 1:
    • Ch 2 (counts as 1st hdc).
    • Hdc in each stitch across the row (59 hdc stitches).
    • Turn your work.
  • Row 2-5: Repeat Row 1 using Color A (or your chosen color for the first section). This creates a solid body for the poncho. Turn at the end of each row.
  • Row 6-9: Change to Color B.
    • Ch 2 (counts as first hdc).
    • Hdc across the row.
    • Turn.
  • Row 10-13: Change to Color C.
    • Ch 2 (counts as first hdc).
    • Hdc across the row.
    • Turn.
  • Row 14-17: Change to Color D.
    • Ch 2 (counts as first hdc).
    • Hdc across the row.
    • Turn.
  • Row 18-21: Change to Color E.
    • Ch 2 (counts as first hdc).
    • Hdc across the row.
    • Turn.
  • Row 22-25: Change to Color F.
    • Ch 2 (counts as first hdc).
    • Hdc across the row.
    • Turn.
  • Row 26-29: Change to Color G.
    • Ch 2 (counts as first hdc).
    • Hdc across the row.
    • Turn.
  • Row 30-33: Change back to Color A and repeat until the poncho reaches approximately 60 inches (152.5 cm) in length.
    • Continue alternating the colors as you go, using the same technique of 4 rows per color, creating a striped effect throughout the piece.

Neckline and Finishing:

  • Once you have reached the desired length, fold the piece in half lengthwise to create the poncho shape.
  • Create the Neckline:
    • To create a neckline opening, leave a gap at the center of the piece. This gap will determine how wide your head opening is.
    • For this example, leave a gap of about 12-14 inches at the top (or adjust based on head size). This will allow for comfortable wearing.
  • Final Edge:
    • Row 34: Ch 2, and hdc along the top edge, finishing the neckline opening. This row will complete the edge and prevent the poncho from having an unfinished look.
    • Row 35: Turn your work, ch 2, and hdc across the entire top edge for a smooth, neat finish.

Edging the Poncho:

  • Use Color B or any desired contrasting color.
  • Row 36: Ch 1 and sc evenly across all edges (top, bottom, and sides).
    • This will add a clean and professional border to the poncho.
    • Turn, and repeat the sc stitch across each side and edge until you’ve worked all around the piece.
    • Turn and finish with a final slip stitch to close the edge.

Assembly:

  • Fold the poncho in half widthwise to form a tube with an open top for the head and open sides for the arms.
  • Using your large-eye blunt needle, sew along the two side edges (about 6-8 inches from the bottom) to create arm openings.
    • Leave enough room for comfortable movement.
  • Weave in all ends using your blunt needle to ensure the yarn tails are securely hidden.
