Instructions for Making the Christmas Mug Rug Pattern

1. Sew the Rows

To begin the construction, lay out the cut pieces. Arrange the pieces so that the gift boxes are stacked on top of each other and are sandwiched by the background fabric.

Once the layout is established, sew each row together. After sewing, press the seams toward the darker fabric.

2. Pin the Rickrack

The rickrack or ribbon pieces are used to create the gift “bows” and wraps. Pin the ribbon or rickrack in place where you want them on your gift boxes.

This design incorporates the rickrack ribbons as the perfect place to tuck a gift card or small present, potentially tucking a surprise in each gift box to make the holiday special.

For the bow at the top, take the 10″ rickrack piece and fold it in half. Pin the center of this folded piece to the top piece of fabric. Next, fold each end down and pin it into place to form the 3D loops for the bow.

Pro Tip: To minimize bulk, you may offset the rickrack on the presents. If you are using a thin material, such as silk or satin ribbon, bulk may not be an issue, and you can pin a continuous line across the pieces instead.

3. Sew It All Together

Once the rickrack and ribbon pieces are pinned in place, sew all the fabric rows together to secure the rickrack to the fabric. For the bow, sew the ends of the ribbon piece to the long edge of the top gift fabric.

4. Finish

The final step is to turn the sewn mug rug top into a finished quilted item. Lay the mug rug top on top of the batting and backing fabric to create a quilt sandwich.

Quilt the piece as desired. Finally, trim the edges evenly and attach the binding.
