Instructions for Making the Spiral Granny Squares Pattern
This pattern is worked in multiple sections: the spiral itself (using colors A, B, and C), and the squaring-off border (using color D).
Make squares in three sizes for a fading spiral effect, or keep all squares the same size for uniformity.
Spiral Section (3 Colors – A, B, C):
- Foundation: With Color A, ch 2. Work 3 dc into the 2nd ch from hook. Drop loop from hook (do not fasten off). With Color B, join into the same chain, ch 3 (counts as dc), work 3 dc. Drop loop. With Color C, join into the same chain, ch 3, work 3 dc.
- Now you have 3 wedges started in 3 different colors.
- Round 2 (spiral continues): Insert hook into dropped loop from Color A. Continue around your own wedge only.
In each of the next 3 sts: 2 dc in each (6 sts total for this color). Drop loop. Pick up Color B, do the same: 2 dc in each of next 3 sts. Drop loop. Repeat for Color C. Drop loop.
- Round 3: Pick up Color A: (1 dc in next st, 2 dc in next st) – repeat 3 times (9 sts total). Drop loop. Repeat with Color B and Color C, in sequence.
- Round 4: (1 dc in next 2 sts, 2 dc in next st) – repeat 3 times (12 sts total). Repeat for all three colors. This completes the spiral section for a Small Spiral Square.
- To make Medium or Large Spiral Squares, continue increasing with this pattern logic:
- Medium: 5 rounds (ending with 15 or 18 sts per wedge)
- Large: 6 rounds (ending with 21 or 24 sts per wedge)
Squaring Off with Color D:
Attach Color D to any st along the edge of the spiral.
Corner Setup (based on 4 sides):
- Work evenly along one spiral color’s edge: sc, hdc, dc, dc, tr, ch 2 (corner), tr, dc, dc, hdc, sc
- Repeat this shaping for all three color spirals.
- For Medium and Large sizes, increase the number of stitches before/after the corner to ensure a square shape (e.g., add an extra tr or dc).
- Last Round (Optional for All Sizes): Work one round of sc in Color D around the entire square to even edges and make joining easier later.
Blank Squares (No Spiral):
- Follow same stitch count and border shaping as spiral squares, but use a solid color instead of working spirals.
- Option 1: Work traditional granny square in Color D to size match.
- Option 2: Make a plain square using rows of dc or sc with Color D, then border it to match spiral squares.
Assembly:
- Lay out all squares before joining to plan spiral flow (e.g., darkest at bottom fading to light at top).
- Use invisible join, slip stitch, or whipstitch for a clean finish.
- Block each square for even edges.
