Stitching Instructions for Making the Beginner Chunky Crochet Basket Pattern:
Base of the Basket:
Round 1:
- Start by holding two strands of yarn together.
- Ch 16 (chain 16), then work into the second chain from the hook:
- Sc 14 (single crochet 14) in each stitch.
- 5sc in last ch (this creates a rounded base). Mark the 2nd and 4th stitches for later reference.
- Work across the opposite side of the chain, sc 13 stitches.
- 4sc in the last stitch (mark the 2nd and 4th st). You should have 36 stitches total after this round.
Round 2:
- Continue working in a spiral (no joining at the end of the round).
- Sc in the next stitch, mark this as the first stitch of the round.
- [Sc to the next marker, 3sc in the marked stitch (move marker to the 2nd stitch)] repeat 4 times.
- You will now have 44 stitches at the end of the round.
Round 3:
- Sc around the entire round, placing 3sc in the marked stitches from the previous round.
- Move the beginning marker to the first stitch.
- After this round, you will have 52 stitches.
Round 4:
- Repeat Round 3 (sc around, placing 3sc in the marked stitches) for a total of 52 stitches.
Round 5:
- Change your stitch to Hdc (half double crochet) around the entire round.
- Continue to place 3hdc in the marked stitches.
- Do not replace the increase markers, but remember to move the beginning marker to the first stitch of each round.
- After this round, you will have 68 stitches.
Sides of the Basket:
Round 1:
- Begin working into the back loop of each stitch (this is called Sc in blp and 3rd lp).
- Move the beginning marker to the last stitch of the round (this indicates the end, instead of the start of the round, which will be helpful as you move forward).
Round 2:
- For this round, alternate between the Waistcoat Stitch (wcs) and Sc in BLO.
- [Wcs 1, sc BLO 1] around the entire round.
- Move the marker to the last stitch.
Rounds 3-11:
- Repeat Round 2 for a total of 9 rounds. This forms the side walls of your basket, using a combination of waistcoat stitch and single crochet in the back loop only for a textured finish.
Round 12:
- Continue with the [Wcs 1, sc BLO 1] pattern for the first 2 stitches.
- Then, wcs 1, ch 9, skip 7 stitches, and continue with the [wcs 1, sc BLO 1] pattern for the remaining 13 stitches.
- Repeat the sequence for the second chain space: wcs 1, ch 9, skip 7 stitches, and continue with the [wcs 1, sc BLO 1] for the remaining stitches in the round.
- You will have the first opening for the handle.
- Move the ending marker to the last stitch.
Round 13:
- [Wcs 1, sc BLO 1] to the first chain space.
- Work sc 13 in the ch-space.
- Continue with [wcs 1, sc BLO 1] to the next ch-space, and sc 13 in the ch-space.
- Finish the round with [wcs 1, sc BLO 1] to the last stitch.
- Sl st BLO in the last stitch (this joins the round and finishes the edge).
- Fasten off your yarn.
Finishing:
Once you’ve completed all the rounds, the basket is nearly done! The next step is to weave in all ends to secure the yarn and tidy up the edges. Use a yarn needle to weave the yarn tails into the stitches of the basket, so they won’t come undone over time.
