Pattern Description:
Corner-to-Corner (C2C) afghans are a popular crochet technique that works diagonally from one corner to the opposite corner.
This method creates a textured, block-like design that is visually appealing and easy to customize.
C2C is suitable for both beginners and experienced crocheters because it involves simple repeating blocks.
The pattern allows for square or rectangular shapes and can be made using either double crochet (dc) or half double crochet (hdc) stitches.

C2C Block Basics
- Each block consists of 3 ch + 3 dc (or hdc if desired) worked into the designated space.
- Blocks are joined diagonally, forming a stair-step pattern.
- The first block starts at one corner, increasing by one block each row until the desired width is reached, then decreasing symmetrically toward the opposite corner.
Instructions for Making the Corner to Corner Afghan Pattern:
Step 1: Foundation Block
- Ch 6.
- Dc in 4th ch from hook (counts as first dc of first block) and in next 2 ch. (1 block complete)
- Turn to start Row 2.
Step 2: Increasing Rows
- Row 2: Ch 6, turn.
- Dc in 4th ch from hook and next 2 ch.
- Sl st into top of first block from previous row. (2 blocks on Row 2)
- Rep increasing rows by adding 1 block per row until the afghan reaches the desired width (halfway point).
- Tip: Keep tension even to maintain a straight diagonal edge.
Step 3: Even Rows (Middle Section)
- Work the established pattern without increasing or decreasing if a rectangular afghan is desired.
- Continue following the diagonal block pattern.
- Add colors as desired by changing yarn at the end of a block or row.
Step 4: Decreasing Rows
- After reaching the widest point, begin decreasing 1 block per row.
- Skip the first block of the row and continue in the same block pattern.
- Rep until 1 block remains, forming the opposite corner of the afghan.
Step 5: Border (Optional)
- Once the main afghan is complete, a border can be added to frame the work.
- Common border: sc around the edges, placing 3 sc in each corner.
- Additional rounds can be added for a wider border or decorative finish.
Step 6: Finishing
- Weave in all yarn ends using a yarn needle.
- Block afghan if needed to square the edges and smooth the diagonal lines.
- Enjoy your completed C2C afghan!
Tips for Customization
- Size: Adjust by adding or removing blocks. Each block is roughly 1.5–2″ square with worsted weight yarn.
- Colorwork: Use multiple yarns for stripes, gradients, or picture designs.
- Texture: Experiment with hdc, dc, or popcorn stitches to change texture.
This structured approach makes the pattern easy to follow, ensures proper terminology, and keeps instructions suitable for both beginners and intermediate crocheters.
