Round-by-Round Stitching Guide for the Covered in Cats Afghan Pattern:
Start from the Bottom Right Corner:
- Refer to the graph and begin in the bottom right corner, working diagonally. The rows are worked in increasing order until the widest point, and then you’ll start decreasing.
Increase Rows (Building Blocks):
- At the beginning of each row, Ch 6.
- Work 1 Dc into the fourth Ch from the hook, followed by 1 Dc into each of the next two Ch. This creates your first block of the row.
- To attach the block to the previous row, sl st into the Ch-3 space of the nearest block from the last row. This joins the blocks.
- After attaching, Ch 3, then work 3 Dc into the same Ch-3 space. Repeat this process to add blocks along the row until you reach the end.
Color Changes:
- Refer to the graph for where to switch from Color A (Silver Heather) to Color B (Black).
- To change colors, work the last yo of the last Dc with the new color. Drop the old color to the back and continue crocheting with the new color.
- Leave a tail of the old color to weave in later with the yarn needle.
Turning Rows:
- At the end of each row, turn your work.
- Work the next row from right to left or left to right, depending on your position in the graph. Continue increasing rows until you reach the widest point on the graph.
Decrease Rows (Narrowing the Blanket):
- Once you’ve reached the widest point of the graph, you’ll begin decreasing rows.
- To decrease, turn your work and sl st into the first 3 Dc of the nearest block, then into the Ch-3 space. This moves your working position inwards, narrowing the row.
- Continue creating blocks by Ch 3 and working 3 Dc into each Ch-3 space, just like in the increase rows, but only up to the last full block for each row.
Edging/Trim
- Single Crochet Around the Blanket:
- With Color A (Silver Heather), work Sc evenly around the entire blanket.
- For each block along the edge, place 3 Sc per block to create an even trim.
- When you reach a corner, work 3 Sc into one stitch at the corner to keep the edges flat and prevent curling.
- Switching Colors for the Trim:
- When you reach the bottom left corner of rows 66-83, switch to Color B (Black).
- After completing this section, switch back to Color A for the remainder of the trim.
- Finish the Trim:
- Once you’ve gone all the way around the blanket, join the trim with a sl st into the first Sc.
- Tie off the yarn and weave in all loose ends using the yarn needle.
Additional Tips:
- Mark your rows: Cross off rows on your graph as you complete them to avoid confusion.
- Tension control: Ensure your stitches are even to prevent puckering or overly tight edges.
- Weaving in ends: Use the yarn needle to securely weave in color change tails to prevent unraveling.
