Stitching Instructions for Making Crochet Amigurumi Octopus Pattern:

Making the Body (Make 1)

Start with the body of the octopus. It’s worked in rounds, and we will be using a magic ring to start.

  • Round 1: Make a magic ring, then crochet 6 sc into the ring. Pull the ring tight to close it. (6 sc)
  • Round 2: Work 2 sc in each stitch around (inc). (12 sc)
  • Round 3: 1 sc, inc around (repeat from to ). (18 sc)
  • Round 4: 2 sc, inc around (repeat from to ). (24 sc)
  • Round 5: 3 sc, inc around (repeat from to ). (30 sc)
  • Round 6: 4 sc, inc around (repeat from to ). (36 sc)
  • Round 7-10: Sc in each stitch around for 4 rounds (36 sc for 4 rounds).
  • Round 11: 4 sc, dec around (repeat from to ). (30 sc)
  • Round 12: 3 sc, dec around (repeat from to ). (24 sc)
  • Round 13: 2 sc, dec around (repeat from to ). (18 sc)
  • Round 14: 1 sc, dec around (repeat from to ). (12 sc)
  • Round 15: Dec around (6 sc).
    • Fasten off and leave a long yarn tail for sewing. Stuff the body with polyester fiberfill to your desired firmness. Finish closing the top hole by sewing the opening shut using a yarn needle.

Making the Tentacles (Make 8)

The octopus has 8 tentacles, and they can be customized to be longer or shorter depending on your preference.

  • Round 1: Start with a magic ring, then crochet 6 sc into the ring. (6 sc)
  • Round 2: Inc in each stitch around (12 sc).
  • Round 3-5: Sc in each stitch around for 3 rounds (12 sc).
  • Round 6: 1 sc, dec around (repeat from to ). (8 sc)
  • Round 7: Dec around (4 sc).
    • Fasten off, leaving a long tail for attaching the tentacle to the body.
    • Lightly stuff each tentacle with fiberfill for some added shape (optional).

Repeat these steps for all 8 tentacles.

Attaching the Tentacles to the Body

Now that you have all 8 tentacles, it’s time to sew them onto the octopus’ body.

  • Take the long yarn tail from each tentacle and attach them one at a time to the bottom of the octopus’ body.
  • Evenly space the tentacles around the body. You can position them in a circular pattern for a nice, balanced look.
  • Use a yarn needle to sew each tentacle securely to the body. You can make the tentacles look more natural by slightly bending them as you attach them.

Adding the Eyes

Now it’s time to add the eyes to your octopus.

  • Safety Eyes: Insert the safety eyes between rounds 6 and 7 of the body. Space them evenly, around 4-5 stitches apart.
  • Embroidered Eyes: If you prefer to stitch the eyes, use black embroidery thread. Stitch two small dots for eyes about 1-2 rows above the bottom of the body.

Final Assembly and Finishing

  • Weaving in Ends: Use a yarn needle to weave in any loose ends from the body, tentacles, and eyes.
  • Shaping: Gently massage the body to even out the stuffing. If necessary, add more stuffing through the opening at the top of the body before you close it.
  • Tentacle Styling: If you want to make your octopus’ tentacles look extra fun, you can twist or curl them slightly. For curly tentacles, you can even use a crochet hook to create spiral effects.

Optional Customizations:

  • Colors: Feel free to use different colors for the body, tentacles, or even add color stripes to the tentacles.
  • Texture: For a textured effect, consider using a different stitch, like half-double crochet (hdc), for some of the rounds in the tentacles.
  • Accessories: Add a small bow, or a tiny shell made from a different color to personalize your octopus!
