Step-by-Step Instructions for the Crochet Dinosaur Hat for Kids Pattern:
Step 1: Create the Brim
- Ch 9
- This forms the width of the brim.
- Row 1: Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and in each ch across (8 sc). Turn.
- Row 2: Ch 1, sc in the back loop only (BLO) of each st across. Turn.
- Repeat Row 2 until the brim measures 18 inches (or desired circumference). Ensure it stretches comfortably to fit the head.
- Bring the short ends together and slip stitch through both layers to join, forming a loop. Do not fasten off.
Step 2: Begin the Hat Body
- Switch to J/6.0mm hook if using a different hook for the body.
- Round 1: Ch 1, evenly distribute and sc around the edge of the brim, placing one sc per row. Ensure the total stitch count is a multiple of 6. Join with a slip stitch to the first sc.
- Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with a slip stitch.
- Repeat Round 2 until the hat body measures 7 inches tall, ending with a slip stitch.
Step 3: Shape the Crown
- Decrease Rounds:
- Round 1: Ch 1, sc in the next 4 sts, dec over the next 2 sts. Repeat from * to end. Join with a slip stitch.
- Round 2: Ch 1, sc in the next 3 sts, dec over the next 2 sts. Repeat from * to end. Join with a slip stitch.
- Round 3: Ch 1, sc in the next 2 sts, dec over the next 2 sts. Repeat from * to end. Join with a slip stitch.
- Continue decreasing in this pattern until there are 6-8 stitches remaining.
- Fasten off, leaving a long tail. Thread the tail through the remaining stitches with a tapestry needle and pull tightly to close the top. Secure with a knot.
Step 4: Add Dinosaur Spikes (Optional)
- Use the additional colors in the Caron x Pantone braid to make small triangle shapes for spikes.
- Spike Pattern:
- Ch 8.
- Row 1: Sc in 2nd ch from the hook and each ch across. Turn. (7 sc)
- Row 2: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next 3 sts, sc2tog. Turn. (5 sc)
- Row 3: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in next st, sc2tog. Turn. (3 sc)
- Row 4: Ch 1, sc3tog. Fasten off.
- Repeat to make 5-6 spikes.
- Attach the spikes evenly along the back of the hat using a tapestry needle.
Step 5: Add a Pom-Pom (Optional)
- Use a pom-pom maker or wrap yarn around your fingers to create a pom-pom in one or multiple colors from the braid.
- Attach the pom-pom securely to the top of the hat.
Step 6: Finish
- Weave in all loose ends with a tapestry needle.
- Trim any excess yarn.
