Stitching Instructions for Making Wasilla Poncho Pattern:

Neckband:

  • Foundation Row:
    • Ch 100 (or adjust the number of chs to fit around your neck comfortably).
    • This is the foundation chain for the neckband of your poncho. If you prefer a wider or narrower neck opening, adjust the number of chs accordingly.
  • Row 1:
    • Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook and across the foundation chain. (100 sc)
    • Turn your work after completing the row.
  • Row 2:
    • Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across the row.
    • Repeat this row (Row 2) until the neckband measures approximately 25 inches in circumference.
  • Once the neckband reaches the desired length, do not fasten off. Continue to the main body of the poncho.

Poncho Body:

  • First Round (Join Neckband to Poncho Body):
    • Ch 1 (does not count as a st).
    • Sc evenly around the neckband, placing 3 sc in each of the 4 corner stitches (at the front, back, and each side).
    • Join with a sl st to the first sc.
  • Body Rows:
    • Row 1: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st around. Join with a sl st to the first sc.
    • Row 2: Ch 1, turn. Sc in each st across, join with a sl st.
    • Repeat Row 2 until the side length measures 22 inches (for an adult-sized poncho). You can adjust this length if you desire a longer or shorter poncho.

Increasing for Center Panel:

To shape the poncho and create a wider center panel, you will need to add increases along the row.

  • Row 1 (Increase Row):
    • Ch 1, turn.
    • Sc in the first 25 sts, then inc (2 sc in the same st) in the next st.
    • Sc in the next 50 sts, then inc in the next st.
    • Sc in the remaining 25 sts.
    • Join with a sl st.
  • Row 2 (Repeat Increase):
    • Ch 1, turn.
    • Sc in each st across, placing inc in the same positions as in Row 1.
    • Join with a sl st.
  • Repeat Row 2 until the length of the center panel measures 32 inches.

Final Shaping (Optional Decorative Edging):

  • Once you have finished the center length, you can add a decorative edging along the bottom of the poncho for a polished finish.
  • Edge Row:
    • Ch 1, turn.
    • Sc evenly across the bottom edge, placing 3 sc in each corner to maintain the shape.
    • Fasten off and weave in the yarn ends with a yarn needle.

Finishing:

  • Weave in the Ends: Using a yarn needle, weave in any loose ends from the yarn to ensure a clean finish.
  • Optional Fringe (for Extra Detail): If you’d like to add fringe, cut several strands of yarn to your desired length, then tie them evenly along the bottom edge of the poncho.
