Uses for the Double Crochet Mesh Pattern
- Summer tops or cover-ups
- Market or tote bags
- Lightweight scarves and wraps
- Blankets and baby throws with decorative borders
- Lining for granny square projects or insets in garments
Materials Needed
- Yarn: Scheepjes Stone Washed (DK weight; 78% Cotton, 22% Acrylic)
- Amount: Approx. 100g (about 246 yards) for a 12″ x 12″ swatch
- Hook: 4.0 mm crochet hook (US G/6 or size needed to meet gauge)
- Notions:
- Tapestry needle (for weaving in ends)
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Blocking mat and pins (optional but recommended)
Measurements & Gauge
- Swatch Size: 12″ x 12″ (30.5 cm x 30.5 cm)
- Gauge: 14 dc sts and 8 mesh rows = 4″ x 4″ (10 cm x 10 cm)
Note: Gauge is not crucial for stitch patterns unless used for fitted garments, but matching gauge is helpful for consistent sizing.
Stitches & Abbreviations (US Terms)
- ch – chain
- dc – double crochet
- sk – skip
- sp – space
- st(s) – stitch(es)
- rep – repeat
- RS/WS – right side / wrong side
Tip: The mesh is formed by alternating dc and ch-1, creating a lacy, open fabric.
Pattern Notes
- This pattern uses a simple 2-row repeat after the foundation.
- Always begin the row with a ch 3 which counts as the first dc + ch-1.
- The mesh looks best when blocked to open up the stitch definition.
- The number of foundation chains should be even + 2 extra chains (one for height, one for the first dc base).
Instructions
Foundation Chain:

Ch 38 (36 + 2; adjust as needed).
Row 1 (Setup):

Dc in 4th ch from hook (first 3 chs count as 1 dc + ch-1). Ch 1, sk next ch, dc in next ch; rep from * to end of row. Turn. → (You will end with a dc in the final ch.)
Row 2:

Ch 3 (counts as dc + ch-1), dc in next dc, ch 1; rep from * to last dc, dc in top of turning ch. Turn.
Repeat Row 2 until piece measures your desired length.

For a swatch: Work 24 rows for approx. 12″ length.
Customization Tips

- To adjust width, change the foundation chain: use any even number + 2.
- To adjust length, continue repeating Row 2 until desired measurement is reached.
- For garments or bags, finish with a solid row of dc or sc for stability.
Finishing Instructions

- Fasten off your yarn with a final ch and snip the tail.
- Use a tapestry needle to weave in ends securely on the WS.
- If needed, block your mesh fabric to desired dimensions:
- Lightly wet or steam
- Pin to shape
- Let dry flat
