Stitching Instructions for Making the Bistro Socks Pattern:
Main Sock Body (Leg and Foot)
- Foundation:
- Fsc 41 (or any multiple of 4 + 1).
- Ensure the count remains consistent throughout the pattern.
- Row 1 (Start of Shell Pattern):
- Ch 3 (counts as dc), work 1 dc in first sc (this forms a half shell).
- Sk next sc, sc in next sc, sk next sc, work a shell (2 dc, ch 1, 2 dc) in next sc.
- Repeat to across.
- In the last sc, work 2 dc, ch 1.
- Ss to top of beginning ch 3 to join.
- Ch 1 and turn.
- Row 2 (Continuing the Shell Pattern):
- Sc in ch space of shell, work shell in next sc.
- Continue working in the established pattern around.
- Ss to join, ch 3, turn.
- Continue working in pattern rounds until the sock measures approximately 3″ from the start.
Heel Opening
- Creating the Heel Opening:
- Flatten the sock widthwise.
- Identify the midpoint (where the side edges are).
- Skip across half the shells, working 20 fsc to create the heel gap.
- Attach the chain to the opposite side with ss.
- Continue working in pattern across the newly created foundation chain and the rest of the sock body.
- Preventing Gaps:
- When reattaching the yarn after the fsc, work the first few stitches slightly loosely.
- If small holes appear at the corners, use sc2tog or sc3tog at the edges to tighten gaps.
Foot Section
- Continue working in the established pattern until the total sock length (excluding the toe) is 4″ less than the final foot length.
- Transitioning to Toe Section:
- Work one last shell row.
- Ch 1 and turn.
Toe Section (Worked in Continuous Rounds)
- Setting Up for Decreases:
- Work sc evenly across the toe section.
- Adjust the stitch count to match the original fsc count minus 1 (e.g., 40 sts).
- Join with ss.
- First Round of Toe Decreases:
- Ch 1, do not turn.
- Work sc around, placing sc2tog over the two stitches before and after each side marker.
- Ss to join.
- Second Round (No Decreases):
- Ch 1, work even in sc.
- Ss to join.
- Repeat these two rounds, decreasing by 4 stitches each decrease round until 20 stitches remain.
- Closing the Toe:
- Cut a long tail, turn the sock inside out.
- Use ss to sew the toe closed.
- Fasten off and weave in ends.
Heel Section
- Attaching Yarn for Heel:
- Attach yarn to one side of the heel opening.
- Work sc evenly around the heel gap, adjusting for stitch count consistency (approx. 42 sc).
- Working Heel Decreases:
- Identify and mark two side stitches.
- Work sc2tog before and after each side marker in the first decrease round.
- Alternate with an even round (sc all around) just like the toe section.
- Continue decreasing every other round until 18 stitches remain.
- Closing the Heel:
- Cut a long tail, turn sock inside out.
- Use ss to sew the heel closed.
- Fasten off and weave in ends.
Finishing Touches
- Check for Loose Ends & Adjust Fit:
- Weave in all yarn tails securely.
- Stretch the sock gently to shape it.
- Repeat for the Second Sock!
