Mosaic Basket

Materials Needed & Measurements:

  • Suggested Yarn:
    • Bernat Maker Home Dec (bulky, #5 cotton/nylon blend) in “Cream”
    • Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn (worsted weight, #4 acrylic) in “Aqua Blue”
  • Yarn Measurements:
    • Small Basket: 50 yards bulky, 20 yards worsted or DK
    • Medium Basket: 95 yards bulky, 40 yards worsted or DK
  • Gauge: Your first 5 rounds should measure 2.5″ across.
  • Hook Sizes:
    • H (5.0mm) for bulky yarn
    • G (4.25mm) for worsted yarn
  • Finished Pattern Size:
    • Small Basket: 3.5″ wide x 2.25″ tall
    • Medium Basket: 5″ wide x 2.75″ tall

  • Yarn needle
  • Stitch marker
  • Plastic canvas

Abbreviations Key:

  • ch = chain
  • sl st = slip stitch
  • dc = double crochet
  • sc = single crochet
  • st = stitch
  • rep = repeat
  • FO = fasten off

Stitching Instructions for Making the Mosaic Basket Pattern:

Foundation Chain:

  • With bulky yarn (Bernat Maker Home Dec), H (5.0mm) hook, ch the number required for the base size you are making (refer to pattern or size details).
  • Round 1:

  • Join to first ch with a sl st, creating a loop.
  • Ch 2 (this does not count as the first dc).
  • Work dc in each ch around, join to the first dc with a sl st.
  • Round 2:

  • Ch 2 (does not count as dc).
  • Work dc in each dc from Round 1.
  • Join with a sl st.
  • Round 3:

  • Change to worsted yarn (Hobby Lobby I Love This Yarn) and G (4.25mm) hook for colorwork.
  • Ch 1, work a sc in the next dc from Round 2, skip the next dc, repeat from around.
  • Join with a sl st to first sc.
  • Round 4:

  • Change back to bulky yarn.
  • Ch 2 (does not count as dc).
  • Work dc in each sc from the previous round.
  • Join with a sl st to the first dc.
  • Round 5:

  • Change to worsted yarn again, repeating the colorwork step from Round 3.
  • Ch 1, work sc in the next dc, skip the next dc, repeat as before.
  • Join with a sl st to first sc.
  • Round 6 and onwards:

  • Repeat the alternating rounds of dc in bulky yarn and sc in worsted yarn with the skip stitch pattern for as many rounds as needed to reach the desired height. The stitch count will remain consistent with the previous rounds.

  • As you continue, gradually reduce the base until the basket begins to form a vertical side.
  • Work each round until your basket reaches the desired height, maintaining the alternating colorwork stitch pattern.

Finish the Basket:

  • Once the height is reached, fasten off yarn and weave in all ends using the yarn needle.

Plastic Canvas:

  • If necessary, cut a piece of plastic canvas to fit inside the base of the basket for additional stability and structure. You can attach this by stitching it into place with a few whip stitches or securing the edges under the last few rows.

Final Step:

  • Add any finishing touches such as handles or additional decorative stitches. You can personalize the basket by adding contrast trims or embellishments.
