Sew eleven assorted print rectangles (2-1/2″×3-1/2″) to create a 3-1/2″×22-1/2″ strip, then repeat the process to make a second strip.

Materials Required

To create the Coneflower Place Mat, the following materials are needed:

  • 1 10″ square of green print fabric (for appliqués)
  • 1/4 yard total of assorted prints in red and purple (for appliqués)
  • 1/2 yard cream print fabric (for both the front and back of the placemat)
  • 1 13-1/2″ x 18-1/2″ rectangle of fusible foam (e.g., Flex-Foam 1-Sided Fusible Stabilizer from Pellon)

The finished size of the placemat is 13″ x 18″.

Cutting Instructions

The cutting instructions are based on a usable fabric width of 42″. Here’s how to prepare the pieces:

Fusible Web Preparation

  • Place the fusible web paper-side up on the patterns and trace each pattern, maintaining a 1/2″ space between them.
  • Cut each shape approximately 1/4″ outside the traced lines.

Fabric Cutting

  • Cut four each of patterns A, B, and B reversed from the green print.
  • Cut 8 units of Pattern C, 12 units of Pattern D, and 4 units of Pattern E from the assorted red and purple prints.
  • Cut 2rectangles from the cream print, each measuring 13.5 inches by 18.5 inches.

Appliqué Placement

  • Position the prepared appliqué pieces on a cream rectangle following the Appliqué Placement Diagram. Maintain a ½-inch space at the bottom and a 2½-inch space on each side.
  • Fuse the pieces in place following the manufacturer’s instructions.

Stitching

Secure each appliquéd piece by machine-blanket stitching around the edges with matching threads.

Final Assembly

  1. Fuse the fusible foam stabilizer to the wrong side of the appliquéd front.
  2. Layer this front with the second cream rectangle, right sides together. Sew around, leaving a 5″ opening on one edge.
  3. Turn the placemat right side out through this opening and press it flat.

Constructing the Leaf Block

  1. Draw a diagonal line on the incorrect side of every white printed square.
  2. Align the white and green squares, sew along the marked line, then trim and press open to create a stem unit.
  3. Layer and sew together white and assorted print squares to form triangle-squares. Each should measure 3″.
  4. Arrange the stem unit with assorted squares and triangle-squares in three rows to assemble the leaf unit. Sew them together to create an 8″ square leaf block.
  5. Secure blue rectangular pieces to the edges of the leaf block to form a larger unit with overall dimensions of 10½ inches.

Finalizing the Place Mat

  • Sew brown-bordered rectangles along the edges of the leaf block to create a top measuring 12½″ by 10½″.

  • Hand-quilting thread
  • 5″ of 3/4″-wide lace trim
  • 7″ of 1/2″-wide red rickrack

Cutting Instructions

Cut the fabric pieces as follows:

Creating the Appliqués and Yo-Yos

  1. Prepare Fusible Web: Place the fusible web paper side up on patterns D and E, trace the indicated shapes with a ½-inch gap between tracings, and cut each shape approximately ¼ inch beyond the traced lines.
  2. Fuse Shapes: Press each fusible-web shape onto the backside of assorted red prints according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Allow them to cool, then cut along the drawn lines and remove the paper backings.
