Jazz Age Crochet Washcloth

Pattern Description:

Stitching Instructions for Making the Jazz Age Crochet Washcloth Pattern:

The construction begins with the Body.

  • Start by chaining 42 stitches.
  • Row 1:
Single crochet (sc) into the second chain from the hook.
  • Single crochet (sc) into the second chain from the hook. Then, repeat the sequence: skip 3 chain, work 9 double crochet (dc) into the next chain, skip 3 chain, work 1 single crochet (sc) into the next chain. Repeat this sequence from * until the end of the row, then turn.
  • Row 2:

  • Chain 3 (counts as 1 dc), work 1 double crochet (dc) into the first stitch. Then, repeat the sequence: chain 5, skip the 9 dc group, work a v-stitch [1 dc, chain 1, 1 dc] into the next sc.

Repeat from *, ending with chain 5, skip the last 9 dc group, and work 2 double crochet (dc) into the last single crochet (sc). Turn the work.

  • Chain 3 (counts as 1 dc), work 1 double crochet (dc) into the first stitch. Then, repeat the sequence: chain 3, work 1 single crochet (sc) into the 5th double crochet (dc) of the 9 dc group, chain 3, work a v-stitch into the next sc. Repeat from * until the end of the row.

After completing the body, add the Border.

  • Border Row 1:

  • Chain 1, turn to work along the outer perimeter. Work 1 single crochet (sc) in each space along the edge, placing 2 single crochet (sc) in each corner space. Complete the round by joining with a Slip stitch (Sl st) into the starting single crochet (sc).

For finishing, weave in all yarn ends. Blocking is recommended, particularly if the washcloth is intended as a gift, as it enhances the appearance of the stitch pattern. The approximate gauge for the pattern stitch is 2 shells equaling 4 inches.
