Stitching Instructions for Making the Pebble Beach Washcloth Pattern:
To begin the washcloth, you will make a foundation chain. For the size specified (approximately 8″ square), you will chain 31. However, if you want to adjust the size, you can chain any odd number.
- Row 1: Start by making a mini bean cluster in the 3rd chain from the hook. Then, repeat the sequence: chain 1, skip a stitch, mini bean cluster in the next stitch.
You will repeat this sequence across the row, ending with a mini bean cluster in the last chain. After completing the last stitch of the row, you will chain 2 and turn your work.
- Row 2: For this row, you will work into the chain 1 spaces created in the previous row. Repeat the sequence: mini bean cluster, chain 1.
You will work this sequence in each chain 1 space across the row. To end the row, you will work your final mini bean cluster around the chain 2 at the end of the row.
To do this, you should insert your hook under the chain 2. After completing the last stitch, chain 2 and turn.
- Rows 3 – 26: These rows are worked by repeating row 2. You will continue repeating the instructions for Row 2 for a total of 24 rows (Row 3 through Row 26). This builds the main body of the washcloth.
- Row 27: This row is slightly different from the preceding rows. You will again repeat the sequence: mini bean cluster, chain 1 in each chain 1 space across.
You will also work your final mini bean cluster around the chain 2 at the end of the row by inserting your hook under the chain 2. However, instead of chaining 2 at the end of this row, you will chain 1 and turn.
After completing Row 27, you will continue to the border.
- Border Pattern (Round 1): For the border, you will work single crochet (sc) stitches. Work single crochet in each stitch around the blanket (which refers to the washcloth in this context).
When you reach the corners of the washcloth, you will work a specific sequence: single crochet, chain 2, single crochet (sc, ch 2, sc) in each corner stitch. This sequence helps to turn the corner smoothly and provides a slight increase for the corner.
After completing the border round, you will cut the yarn and weave in your ends. A tapestry needle is used for weaving ends, and a video tutorial is available for learning how to do this so that nothing unravels.
If you are adjusting the size by chaining an odd number other than 31, you should work rows (repeating the pattern rows) until your cloth is square, or whatever shape you want it to be.
