Jumbo the Bee

Materials Needed & Measurements:

  • Yarn: Jumbo chenille in yellow, black, white; small amounts of pink and black.
  • Stuffing: ~16 oz fiberfill.
  • Hook: 10 mm (or 12 mm for a larger bee).
  • Optional: Felt for eyes (black & white) with fabric glue.
  • Finished Size: ~16 in. x 13 in. (with a 12 mm hook).
  • Needle: Jumbo Tapestry Needle – Art No. 3113.

Abbreviations:

  • CH: Chain
  • FLO: Front Loops Only
  • SC: Single Crochet
  • ST(s): Stitch(es)
  • DEC: Decrease
  • INC: Increase
  • SLST: Slip Stitch
  • RND(s): Round(s)
  • [#]: Stitch Count
  • (…) x #: Repeat the instructions within the parentheses # of times.

Special Stitches:

  • Magic Circle: A loop that you crochet into to begin projects worked in the round.
  • Invisible Decrease: Use front loops only for a smoother finish.
  • Pleating: Folding in a zig-zag or “M” shape for structured wings.

Body (Starting in Yellow Yarn):

  • RND 1: Make a magic circle, (SC) x 6. [6]
  • RND 2: (INC) x 6. [12]
  • RND 3: (SC, INC) x 6. [18]
  • RND 4: (2 SC, INC) x 6. [24]
  • RND 5: (3 SC, INC) x 6. [30]
  • RND 6: (4 SC, INC) x 6. [36]
  • RND 7: (5 SC, INC) x 6. [42]
  • RND 8: (6 SC, INC) x 6. [48] 9-12.
  • RND 9-12: SC all around. [48] (4 rounds)
  • Switch to black yarn.
  • RND 13-15: SC all around. [48] (3 rounds)
  • Switch to yellow yarn.
  • RND 16-18: SC all around. [48] (3 rounds)
  • Switch to black yarn.
  • RND 19-21: SC all around. [48] (3 rounds)

Switch to yellow yarn. Insert safety eyes between RNDs 4 & 5, in line with the magic circle center if using safety eyes.

Stuff as you go, ensuring the body is firm but not overstuffed. Fasten off and use the tail to close the remaining hole through FLO. Bury the tail.

Wings (Make 2 in White Yarn):

  • RND 1: Make a magic circle, (SC) x 6. [6]
  • RND 2: (INC) x 6. [12]
    Switch to working in rows.
  • ROW 3: (SC) x 10. CH 1, turn. [10]
  • ROW 4: (SC, INC) x 5. CH 1, turn. [15]
  • ROW 5: (2 SC, INC) x 5. CH 1, turn. [20]
  • ROW 6: (3 SC, INC) x 5. CH 1, fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing. [25]
    Pleat each wing in an “M” shape and secure the pleats by weaving the tail back and forth. Sew the wings along the first black stripe, about 4 stitches apart above the eyes.

Facial Features (Optional):

  • Cheeks: Weave pink yarn across 3 RNDs next to the eyes.
  • Mouth: Use black yarn to stitch a smile or any desired expression, keeping it close to the eyes.
  • Eyebrows (optional): Stitch angled black yarn strands for a scowling expression.
