Stitching Instructions for Making Lavinia Poncho Pattern:

Poncho Body:

  • Foundation Chain: Start by chaining a multiple of 6 stitches depending on the width of your poncho. Add 2 extra chains for turning.
  • Row 1 (Base Row):
    • Turn your work.
    • Work 1 dc into the 4th chain from the hook.
    • Continue dc across the row to the end, keeping an even tension throughout the row.
  • Row 2:
    • Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), turn your work.
    • In each stitch across, work 1 dc, keeping the stitch pattern consistent.
  • Row 3:
    • Ch 3 (counts as 1 dc), turn your work.
    • In the next stitch, dc2tog (double crochet 2 stitches together).
    • Continue with 1 dc into each stitch across until 2 stitches remain.
    • Work dc2tog on the last 2 stitches to decrease.
  • Continue the Body: Repeat Row 3 to form the decreasing shape. Adjust the stitch count as necessary based on the size of the poncho. For each size, make sure the decrease is symmetrical.
  • Textured Pattern: Add texture to your poncho by incorporating fpdc and bpdc. For example, in each row after Row 3, alternate between fpdc and bpdc for a ribbed effect. Work these post stitches into the corresponding dc from the previous row.

Neck Opening:

  • Creating the Neck Opening:
    • After completing the body of the poncho, decide on the size of the neck opening.
    • Leave the center portion of your work unstitched to create the neckline.
    • Skip a set number of stitches in the middle of your row to form the opening, ensuring it’s wide enough to comfortably fit over your head.
  • Continue in the Round: Once the neck opening is formed, work the poncho in the round from the outside edges, connecting the sides to complete the body. You can use sc or dc to join the side seams.

Finishing the Poncho:

  • Joining the Sides:
    • Fold the poncho in half with the wrong side facing inward.
    • Use a whip stitch or slip stitch to join the side edges together, leaving enough room for armholes as desired.
  • Adding the Edging:
    • Create a border around the hem, sleeves, and neckline.
    • For a simple finish, work a row of sc around the edges. Alternatively, use fpdc and bpdc for a more textured, decorative edge.
  • Weaving in Ends: Using a tapestry needle, weave in any loose yarn ends to secure them within the fabric of the poncho.

Customizing Your Lavinia Poncho:

  • Length Adjustment: Adjust the length of your poncho by adding or removing rows before starting the neck opening.
  • Textures: Play with stitch patterns like fpdc, bpdc, or fpsc to create your own texture combinations for a more personalized look.
  • Color Blocking: Experiment with color changes to create stripes or color blocks for a fun, unique style.
