Stitching Instructions for Making the Herringbone Square Basket Set Pattern:

Smaller Basket Instructions

  • Starting Chain: CH 17.
  • Row 1: SC in 2nd CH from hook and across (16 SC).
  • Rows 2-16: CH1, turn, SC in each ST across (16 SC).

Now, we move to working in rounds to create the basket sides.

  • Round 1: CH1, turn. HHDC in each ST across (16). When you reach the corner, work HHDC down the side (16), across the bottom (16), and up the other side (16). Don’t join; you’ll keep working in a continuous round (64).
  • Rounds 2-6: HHDC in each ST around (64).
  • Round 7: HHDC in the first 62 STS. SC in the last 2 STS. Join with a SL ST (64).
  • Round 8: CH1, HDC in each ST around. Join with a SL ST (64).

Switch to a smaller hook (G – 4.25mm).

  • Round 9: SC in the 3rd loop of each ST around (64).
  • Rounds 10-18 (or until the edge reaches the bottom when folded down): SC in each ST around (64).
  • Finish: SL ST into the next ST to smooth the edge. Fasten off, weave in ends, and proceed to the next step of adding the plastic canvas.

Larger Basket Instructions

  • Starting Chain: CH 23.
  • Row 1: SC in 2nd CH from hook and across (22 SC).
  • Rows 2-22: CH1, turn, SC in each ST across (22 SC).

Now, we move to rounds.

  • Round 1: CH1, turn. HHDC across (22), then down the side (22), across the bottom (22), and up the other side (22). Do not join (88).
  • Rounds 2-8: HHDC in each ST around (88).
  • Round 9: HHDC in the first 86 STS. SC in the last 2 STS. Join with a SL ST (88).
  • Round 10: CH1, HDC in each ST around. Join with a SL ST (88).

Switch to a smaller hook (G – 4.25mm).

  • Round 11: CH1, SC in the 3rd loop of each ST around (88).
  • Rounds 12-21 (or until the edge reaches the bottom when folded down): SC in each ST around (88).
  • Finish: SL ST into the next ST to smooth the edge. Fasten off, weave in ends, and move to the next step for plastic canvas.

Special Stitches:

  • HHDC (Herringbone Half Double Crochet): Yarn over, insert the hook, yarn over, pull through the stitch and the first loop on the hook. Yarn over again and pull through both loops.
  • 3rd Loop (Camel Stitch): Insert the hook into the 3rd loop (located just below the back loop), working the stitch to create a braided effect on the right side.
