- Yarn Weight: Worsted (9 wpi)
- Yardage: 65 – 130 yards (59 – 119 m)
- Hook Size: 5.5 mm (I)
- Tapestry Needle: For weaving in ends
- Scissors: For cutting yarn
- Stitch Marker: Optional, for marking rounds
Stitching Instructions
Round 1
Using Color A, make a magic circle. Working into the ring, chain 4 (this counts as the first double crochet and chain 1).
[Double crochet, chain 1] into the ring 7 more times. Join the 3rd chain with a slip stitch. (You should have 8 double crochets and 8 chains.)
Round 2
Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet), then work 2 double crochets in the next chain space.
Double crochet in the next double crochet, then work 2 double crochets in the next chain space.
Repeat from the end. Break the yarn and make a seamless join to the second double crochet. (You should have 24 stitches.)
Round 3
Using Color B, join with a slip stitch to the top of one of the double crochet stitches (make sure it’s not a double crochet that’s worked into a chain space).
Work a spike stitch into the top of the double crochet from Round 1 directly below. Single crochet in the next stitch, single crochet between the posts of the previous stitch and the next stitch, then single crochet in the next stitch.
Work a spike stitch into the top of the double crochet from Round 1 directly below the next stitch. Single crochet in the next stitch, single crochet between the posts of the previous stitch and the next stitch, then single crochet in the next stitch.
Repeat from the end. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the first spike stitch. (You should have 32 stitches.)
Round 4
Chain 1 and single crochet in the first stitch. Chain 4, then skip the next 3 stitches. Single crochet in the next stitch, chain 4, and skip the next 3 stitches.
Repeat from the end. Break the yarn and make a seamless join to the first single crochet of the round. (You should have 40 stitches.)
Round 5
Using Color C, join with a slip stitch to the top of a single crochet from the previous round. Chain 1 and half double crochet in the same stitch.
Work [2 double crochets, chain 1, 2 double crochets] in the chain space. Half double crochet in the next stitch, then [2 double crochets, chain 1, 2 double crochets] in the chain space.
Repeat from the end. Join with a slip stitch to the first half double crochet of the round. (You should have 48 stitches.)
Round 6
Chain 1 and half double crochet in the first stitch. Skip the next 2 stitches, then work 6 double crochets in the chain space, skipping the next 2 stitches.
Half double crochet in the next stitch, skip the next 2 stitches, work 6 double crochets in the chain space, then skip the next 2 stitches.
Repeat from the end. Break the yarn and make a seamless join to the top of the first half double crochet of the round. (You should have 56 stitches.)
Round 7
Using Color D, join with a slip stitch to the top of a half-double crochet from the previous round. Work a spike stitch into the top of the single crochet from Round 4 directly below.
Single crochet in the next 3 stitches, single crochet between the posts of the previous stitch and the next stitch, then single crochet in the next 3 stitches.
Work a spike stitch into the top of the single crochet from Round 4 directly below the next stitch.
Single crochet in the next 3 stitches, single crochet between the posts of the previous stitch and the next stitch, then single crochet in the next 3 stitches. Repeat from to the end.
Join with a slip stitch to the top of the first spike stitch. (You should have 64 stitches.)
For Coaster or Dishcloth:
- Break the yarn and make a seamless join. You’re done!
For Placemat Size - Continue with Round 8.
Round 8
Chain 1 and single crochet in the first stitch. Chain 4, then skip the next 3 stitches. Single crochet in the next stitch, chain 4, and skip the next 3 stitches.
Repeat from the end. Break the yarn and make a seamless join to the first single crochet of the round. (You should have 80 stitches.)
Round 9
Using Color A, join with a slip stitch to the top of a single crochet from the previous round.
Chain 1 and half double crochet in the same stitch. Work 4 double crochets in the chain space.
Half double crochet in the next stitch, then 4 double crochets in the chain space. Repeat from the end.
Join with a slip stitch to the first half double crochet of the round. (You should have 80 stitches.)
Round 10
Chain 1 and half double crochet in the first stitch. Skip the next 2 stitches, then work 5 double crochets between the posts of the previous and next stitches (the second and third stitches of the group), and skip the next 2 stitches.
Half double crochet in the next stitch, skip the next 2 stitches, then work 5 double crochets between the posts of the previous and next stitches, and skip the next 2 stitches. Repeat from the end.
Break the yarn and make a seamless join to the top of the first half of the double crochet of the round. (You should have 96 stitches.)
Round 11
Using Color B, join with a slip stitch to the top of one of the half double crochet stitches from the previous row.
Work a spike stitch into the top of the single crochet from Round 8 directly below. Single crochet in the next 5 stitches.
Work a spike stitch into the top of the single crochet from Round 8 directly below the next stitch. Single crochet in the next 5 stitches.
Repeat from the end. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the first spike stitch. (You should have 96 stitches.)
Round 12
Chain 1 and single crochet in the first stitch. Chain 6, then skip the next 5 stitches. Single crochet in the next stitch, chain 6, and skip the next 5 stitches.
Repeat from the end. Break the yarn and make a seamless join to the first single crochet of the round. (You should have 112 stitches.)
Round 13
Using Color C, join with a slip stitch to the top of a single crochet from the previous round. Chain 1 and half double crochet in the same stitch. Work [3 double crochets, chain 1, 3 double crochets] in the chain space.
Half double crochet in the next stitch, then [3 double crochets, chain 1, 3 double crochets] in the chain space.
Repeat from the end. Join with a slip stitch to the first half double crochet of the round. (You should have 128 stitches.)
Round 14
Chain 1 and half double crochet in the first stitch. Skip the next 3 stitches, then work 7 double crochets in the next chain space.
Skip the next 3 stitches. Half double crochet in the next stitch, skip the next 3 stitches, work 7 double crochets in the chain space, then skip the next 3 stitches. Repeat from the end.
Break the yarn and make a seamless join to the first half double crochet of the round. (You should have 128 stitches.)
Round 15
Using Color D, join with a slip stitch to the top of one of the half double crochet stitches from the previous row.
Work a spike stitch into the top of the single crochet from Round 12 directly below. Single crochet in the next 7 stitches.
Work a spike stitch into the top of the single crochet from Round 12 directly below the next stitch. Single crochet in the next 7 stitches.
Repeat from the end. Join with a slip stitch to the top of the first spike stitch. (You should have 128 stitches.)
Round 16
Chain 1 and single crochet in the first stitch. Chain 3, then skip the next 3 stitches. Single crochet in the next stitch, chain 3, and skip the next 3 stitches.
Repeat from the end. Join with a slip stitch to the first single crochet of the round. (You should have 128 stitches.)
Round 17
Chain 1 and single crochet in the first stitch. Work 4 single crochets into the chain space. Single crochet in the next stitch, then 4 single crochets into the next chain space. Repeat from to the end.
Break the yarn and make a seamless join to the first single crochet of the round. (You should have 160 stitches.)
