Stitching Instructions for Making Monogram Crochet Coasters Pattern:

Foundation Chain (ch)

  • Begin by making ch21. This is the base of your coaster.
  • Ensure the chains are tight enough to support the stitches without stretching. If needed, pull the working yarn slightly after each chain to maintain consistency.

Row 1 (Setup Row)

  • Insert your hook into the 2nd ch from the hook and work 1 sc.
  • Continue to work 1 sc into each ch across (total: 20 sc).
  • When you reach the last ch, turn your work to prepare for Row 2.
  • Note: Keep your stitches uniform by pulling the working yarn just snug enough to close any gaps.

Row 2

  • Reattach the main color yarn to the first st of Row 1 with a sl st worked into both loops.
  • Ch1, which counts as the turning chain for the row.
  • Work 1 sc (BLO) into the same st as the sl st.
  • Continue working 1 sc (BLO) into each st across the row (total: 20 sc).
  • When you finish the last stitch, fasten off both the main and secondary colors if using two colors.
  • Turn your work to start the next row.
  • Tip: Working in BLO creates a subtle ridge effect that adds texture to the coaster.

Rows 3–20

  • For each new row, reattach the main color yarn to the first st of the previous row with a sl st worked into both loops.
  • Ch1 to start the row.
  • Work 1 sc (BLO) into the same st as the sl st.
  • Continue to work 1 sc (BLO) into each st across (total: 20 sc).
  • At the end of each row, fasten off both colors and turn your work.

Color Changes (Using the Monogram Graph)

  • Follow the monogram graph to plan where to switch colors. Each square on the graph represents one sc stitch.
  • Switch colors during a stitch:
    • Insert your hook into the next stitch, yarn over, and pull up a loop.
    • Drop the current color and pick up the new color.
    • Yarn over with the new color and pull through both loops on the hook to complete the stitch.
  • Carrying unused yarn:
    • Float the unused yarn behind your work by loosely laying it along the back.
    • Alternatively, crochet over the unused yarn by holding it along the row and working your stitches over it.
  • Tip: Keep your color changes smooth by maintaining even tension on both working and unused yarn.

Final Row (Row 20)

  • After completing Row 20, finish the row as usual with 1 sc (BLO) in each st.
  • Fasten off all colors. Pull the yarn tail through the final loop to secure it.

Finishing Touches

  • Use a tapestry needle to weave in all loose ends.
    • Thread the needle with the tail and run it through a few stitches on the back of the coaster.
    • Change directions once or twice for extra security before trimming.
  • Block the coaster if needed to shape it into a perfect square.
  • Tip: Blocking is especially helpful for keeping the monogram design crisp and aligned.
