Materials Needed & Measurements
- Suggested Yarn:
- Size 4/ Medium Weight 100% Cotton Yarn
- Example: Lily Sugar & Cream (2 regular skeins or 1 super-size skein)
- Hook Size: 4.5 mm (G-7) or 5.0 mm (H-8), depending on tension
- Needle: Yarn needle for weaving in ends
- Pattern Measurements:
- Gauge: 4×4 inches with a swatch of single crochet (sc) at 13.5 sc per row x 17 rows
- Fit 16.9 fl oz. water bottle loosely & slightly larger bottle with snug fit.
- The base diameter after Round 6 should measure approximately 3 3/8 inches.

- (ch) chain
- (sc) single crochet
- (hdc) half double crochet
- (sc2tog) single crochet two together
- (sl st) slip stitch
Stitching Instructions for Star Stitch Bottle Holder Pattern:
Base of the Bottle Holder
- Round 1:
- Start with a magic circle (or chain 4 and join to form a loop).
- Ch 2 (counts as the first dc).
- Work 11 dc into the circle. Join with a sl st to the top of the ch 2. You should have 12 dc total.
- Round 2:
- Ch 2 (counts as first dc).
- Work 2 dc in each dc around. Join with a sl st to the top of the ch 2. (24 dc)
- Round 3:
- Ch 2 (counts as first dc).
- 1 dc in next st, 2 dc in the next st — repeat this pattern around. Join with a sl st to the top of the ch 2. (36 dc)
- Round 4:
- Ch 2 (counts as first dc).
- 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts, 2 dc in the next st — repeat this pattern around. Join with a sl st to the top of the ch 2. (48 dc)
- Round 5:
- Ch 2 (counts as first dc).
- 1 dc in each of the next 3 sts, 2 dc in the next st — repeat this pattern around. Join with a sl st to the top of the ch 2. (60 dc)
This completes the circular base of the bottle holder.
Transition to the Side of the Bottle Holder
- Round 6:
- Ch 1 (does not count as a stitch).
- Work 1 sc in each dc around to create a base edge. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (60 sc)
- Round 7:
- Ch 1.
- Work 1 sc in each sc around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. (60 sc)
Star Stitch Rounds
Starting in Round 8, you’ll switch to the Star Stitch to add texture and structure to the bottle holder.
Round 8: First Star Stitch Round
- Setting Up the First Star Stitch:
- Ch 3. This chain provides the height to start the first star stitch.
- Insert your hook into the 2nd chain from the hook, yo, pull up a loop (2 loops on hook).
- Insert the hook into the next chain, yo, pull up a loop (3 loops on hook).
- Insert the hook into the first stitch of the round, yo, pull up a loop (4 loops on hook).
- Insert the hook into the next stitch, yo, pull up a loop (5 loops on hook).
- Insert the hook into the following stitch, yo, pull up a loop (6 loops on hook).
- Yo and pull through all 6 loops on the hook. Ch 1 to lock the stitch.
- Continue Star Stitch Across the Round:
- For each new star:
- Insert your hook into the eye of the previous star, yo, pull up a loop.
- Insert into the last stitch used by the previous star, yo, pull up a loop.
- Insert into each of the next 3 sts, pulling up a loop each time.
- Yo and pull through all 6 loops, then ch 1.
- Continue around until you have a complete round of stars, joining with a sl st at the end.
- For each new star:
- Round 9 to Desired Height:
- Repeat the star stitch pattern from Round 8 until the bottle holder reaches the desired height, generally around Round 21.
Top Border of the Bottle Holder
To finish the bottle holder with a sturdy edge:
- Final Round:
- After completing your last star stitch round, ch 1.
- Work 1 sc in each st around, joining with a sl st at the end to give a clean finish.
- Handle (Optional):
- To add a handle, decide where you’d like the handle to start and end along the rim of the bottle holder.
- Ch 25-30 (or to your desired handle length), skip the corresponding number of stitches, and attach with a sl st.
- Ch 1 and work sc across the chain, then sl st to join and secure the handle to the bottle holder.
Finishing Up
- Fasten off and weave in any loose ends with a yarn needle.
- Block the holder if needed to give it a polished look.
