Crochet Pear Granny Square

Materials & Tools

• Crochet Hook: 4.5 mm (Size 7 US / 7 UK)

• Yarn: Aran weight (Medium, Size 4) cotton yarn in 5 colors:

  • Color A: Creamy White (Pear center)

  • Color B: Bright Yellow (Pear skin)

  • Color C: Neutral Cream (Square background)

  • Color D: Coffee Brown (Stem and embroidered seeds)

  • Color E: Leaf Green (Leaf)

• Notions: Tapestry needle for weaving in yarn ends and embroidery.

Step 1: The Pear Center (The Core)

Using Color A (White).

Round 1

1. Form a Magic Circle.

2. Chain 2 (this acts as a height guide and does not count as a stitch).

3. Work 12 double crochets directly into the ring.

4. Pull the yarn tail to close the center hole tightly.

5. Slip stitch into the very first double crochet you made to close the round.

• Total Stitch Count: 12 stitches.

Round 2

1. Chain 1 (does not count as a stitch).

2. In the first stitch, work 1 single crochet and 1 half double crochet together.

3. In the second stitch, work 4 double crochets all into that single loop (this creates the top curve of the pear).

4. In the third stitch, work 1 half double crochet and 1 single crochet together.

5. In the fourth stitch, work 1 single crochet.

6. Over the next 7 stitches, work 2 single crochets into each stitch (this expands the bottom of the pear).

7. In the last stitch, work 1 single crochet.

8. Slip stitch into the first single crochet of the round to finish.

• Total Stitch Count: 24 stitches.

• Cut yarn A and fasten off.

Step 2: The Pear Outline (The Skin)

Turn the piece so the right side is facing you. Securely attach Color B (Yellow) to the very first double crochet made in Round 2.

Round 3

1. Chain 1, then work 1 single crochet into the exact same space where you just attached the yarn.

2. In the next stitch, work 1 half double crochet and 1 double crochet together.

3. In the following stitch, work 1 double crochet and 1 half double crochet together.

4. Work 1 single crochet in the next stitch.

5. Work 1 slip stitch into each of the next 2 stitches.

Step 3: Squaring the Motif

Hold your completed pear upside down (bottom facing upward) with the right side facing you. Locate the two slip stitches at the bottom center from Round 3. Attach Color C (Cream) into the Back Loop Only (BLO) of the second slip stitch.

Round 5 (The Traditional Granny Border)

1. Slip stitch into the nearest chain-1 space. Chain 2 (this acts as your first double crochet).

2. Work 2 double crochets into that same chain space. Chain 1.

3. Corner: In the chain-2 corner space, work [3 double crochets, chain 2, 3 double crochets]. Chain 1.

4. Side: Work 3 double crochets into the next chain-1 space, chain 1, then 3 double crochets into the following chain-1 space. Chain 1.

5. Corner: In the next corner, work [3 double crochets, chain 2, 3 double crochets]. Chain 1.

6. Side: Work 3 double crochets into the next chain-1 space. Chain 1. Skip the next chain-1 space entirely. Work 3 double crochets into the following chain-1 space. Chain 1.

7. Corner: In the next corner, work [3 double crochets, chain 2, 3 double crochets]. Chain 1.

Step 4: Adding the Details

The Stem

Using Color D (Brown). Turn your square so the pear is right-side up.

1. Locate the unworked front loop of the very first double crochet from Round 3. Attach your yarn here.

2. Chain 4.

3. Starting in the second chain from your hook, work 1 slip stitch into each of the 3 chain loops.

4. Secure the stem by making a final slip stitch back into the exact same front loop where you attached the yarn.

5. Fasten off and pull the tails to the back to weave them in.

The Leaf

Using Color E (Green).

1. Locate the unworked front loop of the second double crochet from Round 3 (right next to your stem). Attach your yarn here.

2. Chain 4.

3. Starting in the second chain from your hook, work 1 single crochet, followed by 1 half double crochet in the next chain, and 1 slip stitch in the last chain.

4. Secure the leaf by slip stitching back into the same front loop where you attached the green yarn.

5. Fasten off and weave in the ends.

Step 5: Final Touches

1. Thread a length of Color D (Brown) onto your tapestry needle.

2. Go to the center of the pear (Round 1/Round 2 area).

3. Using a simple straight stitch or a small satin stitch, embroider two tiny teardrop shapes near the middle to resemble pear seeds.

4. Secure the thread on the back of the square, weave in any remaining loose yarn tails, and trim them neatly.
