Free Pineapple Stitch Skirt Pattern

Pineapple Stitch Skirt Pattern

Pattern Description:

The Pineapple Stitch Skirt showcases a delicate lace texture formed by traditional pineapple motifs that widen gracefully as the skirt descends.

Worked from the waistband downward, the pattern creates natural flare and airy movement, making it perfect for summer wear or layering.

Its adjustable motif repeats allow easy customization for any size, length, or style preference.

Materials Needed & Measurements:

For setting the size or measurement of your project:

  • The stitch is done in a multiple of 23 plus two for the base chain.
  • The overall length of the project (such as a wrap) is determined by chaining the multiple of 23 the desired number of times, and then adding two more chains.
  • The final project size (like a wrap or blanket) can be customized by continuing the 18-row repeat (Rows 3 through 20) until the desired width is achieved.

Instructions for Making the Pineapple Stitch Skirt Pattern:

Stitch Fundamentals and Preparation

To begin this stitch pattern, you must make a foundation chain using a multiple of 23 plus two. The length of the project (such as a wrap) is determined by chaining the multiple of 23 the desired number of times, and then adding two more chains.

  • Row 1: Foundation Single Crochet
  • Row 1 consists of working one single crochet (SC) in every stitch for the length of the chain, starting in the second stitch from the hook (the loop on the hook is not counted).
  • Row 2: Starting the Pattern Repeat
  • Row 2 establishes the initial pineapple shaping and is the row that will be repeated as Row 20 later in the pattern repeat sequence.
  • Start: Chain one (does not count as a stitch) and turn your work. Work five double crochets (DC) into the very first stitch. This forms a half-shell or half-pineapple on the end.
    1. Repeat Sequence: Begin the pattern repeat by chaining one (Ch 1) and skipping four stitches (sk 4), then single crochet (SC) into the next stitch.
  • Ch 3, sk 3, SC into the next stitch.
  • Ch 4, sk 4, SC into the next stitch.
  • Ch 3, sk 3, SC into the next stitch. (At this point, you should have a Chain 3 space, Chain 4 space, and Chain 3 space).
  • Ch 1, sk 4, and work nine double crochets (9 DC) all into the next stitch. This completes the repeat.
  • End: Repeat the sequence until the last five stitches of the row. End the row by chaining one, skipping four stitches, and placing five DC into the last stitch.

The 18-Row Repeat: Rows 3 through 20

The main stitch pattern involves repeating the following 18 rows.

Rows 3 & 4: Setting the Base and Creating Initial Pineapple Arches

Row 3 starts the openwork design. The key V-stitch used in this pattern is the Double V-stitch (2 DC, Ch 1, 2 DC in the same stitch).

  • Row 3 Start: Ch 1, turn, DC into the first stitch, then work (Ch 1, DC into the next stitch) four times.
  • Row 3 Repeat: Ch 1, skip the first SC, work a Double V-stitch into the next SC, work a Double V-stitch into the next SC. Ch 1, skip the next SC, and work a (DC, Ch 1) sequence across all nine double crochets from the previous row. Repeat this sequence across the row.
  • Row 4 introduces the first chain spaces for the pineapple: Ch 3, turn. SC into the first Ch 1 space, then chain three (Ch 3) and SC into the next Ch 1 space, repeating this to create four Ch 3 spaces over the half pineapple. Over the V-stitches, you will work two DC into the first V-stitch chain space, Ch 1, and two DC into the second V-stitch chain space. Across the existing nine DC group, create seven Ch 3 spaces by working (Ch 3, SC) into the chain spaces between the double crochets. End the row with Ch 1 and half double crochet (HDC) into the top of the last stitch.

Rows 5 through 10: Completing the First Pineapple

In this phase, the V-stitches/clusters expand while the pineapple chain spaces decrease by one on each row until only one space remains in Row 10.

  • Row 5: Creates six pineapple Ch 3 spaces. The Double V-stitch (2 DC, Ch 1, 2 DC) is worked into the Ch 1 space between the V-stitch clusters of Row 4.
  • Row 7: The center V-stitch is expanded by working (2 DC, Ch 1, 2 DC, Ch 1, 2 DC) all into the chain one space of the V-stitch. This row results in four pineapple Ch 3 spaces.
  • Row 9: Three Double V-stitches are placed across the three available chain spaces (the two V-stitches from the previous row and the chain space separating them). This row results in two pineapple Ch 3 spaces.
  • Row 10: The pineapple completes by working Ch 3 and SC into the single remaining Ch 3 space. New V-stitches are placed in the centers of the three V-stitches from the previous row, separated by Ch 2.

Rows 11 through 20: Starting the Second Pineapple

Row 11 sets the nine DC cluster for the new pineapple, positioned diagonally from the first.

  • Row 11: Ch 1, turn, SC in the first space. V-stitch into the first V-stitch, Ch 2. Work nine DC into the center V-stitch, Ch 2, and V-stitch into the next V-stitch. Chain 3 and SC into the completed pineapple’s chain space.
  • Row 12: Ch 5, turn (counts as a double triple crochet and a Ch 1 space). V-stitch into the next V-stitch, Ch 1. Work (DC, Ch 1) across the nine DC group. The row ends with a double triple crochet into the last stitch.
  • Rows 13-17: Follow the same logic as Rows 4-8, decreasing the new pineapple chain spaces from seven down to four.
  • Row 18: Three V-stitches are worked into the three available chain spaces of the expanded V-stitch cluster from Row 17, with no chains separating them. This reduces the pineapple spaces to three.
  • Row 20 (End of Repeat): Work 5 DC into the first stitch, Ch 2, V-stitch into the next V-stitch. Ch 3, SC into the last chain space of the pineapple, Ch 3. Then, work (V-stitch, Ch 2, 9 DC, Ch 2, V-stitch) across the three V-stitches cluster to begin the next diagonal pineapple. End the row with Ch 2 and 5 DC in the last stitch.

Repeating the Pattern

To continue the pattern, you repeat Rows 3 through 20.

Modification for Subsequent Repeats of Row 3:

When repeating Row 3 from now on (starting with Row 21), there is one necessary change. The original Row 3 instruction directed you to place V-stitches into single crochets.

However, in subsequent repeats, you must work the V-stitches into the V-stitches from the previous row, as the single crochets will no longer be available in the correct placement.

All other instructions for Row 3 remain the same. You continue the 18-row repeat (Rows 3 through 20) until the desired width is achieved.

This completes the Pineapple Stitch Skirt pattern, allowing you to continue repeating the motif sequence until your skirt reaches the perfect fit and length.
