Pattern Description:
This free Bohemian skirt pattern features a soft, high-low silhouette created with a shaped, fitted yoke and a full gathered lower skirt.
Drafted from a basic skirt block, the yoke provides a smooth, tailored fit and closes with a back zipper.
The flowing lower panels offer airy movement ideal for warm weather. Lightweight fabrics and optional lace trim give the skirt its effortless, boho charm.
Materials Needed & Measurements:
Materials Needed
- A skirt block, which is used to draft the pattern.
- An 8 inch zipper.
- Fabric: 3 yards.
- Lining Fabric: Cut the yoke pieces out of a lining fabric, or the same fabric if you have enough.
- Lace Trim: 3 yards.
Key Measurements & Quantities
- Yoke Length: Trace off about the top 8 inches of the skirt block, though this measurement can be made shorter or longer for personal preference.
- Lower Skirt Width: The pattern requires two lower skirt pieces. Each piece needs to be at least 1.5 times your waist measurement wide. You can cut pieces wider if you desire an even fuller skirt.
- Lower Skirt Front Length: The front fold of the skirt should be approximately knee length minus the length of your yoke piece.
- Lower Skirt Back Length: The back fold of the skirt should be approximately maxi length minus the length of your yoke.
- Zipper Constraint: When inserting the zipper, ensure it ends 3/4″ above the bottom yoke edge.
- Seam Allowance: Make sure to add a seam allowance to the center back for the zipper.
Instructions for Making the Bohemian Skirt Pattern:
1. Prepare Your Pattern Pieces
Begin by drafting the upper yoke of the skirt using the top portion of a basic skirt block or sloper. Trace about the top 7-8 inches of the block to form the foundation of the yoke.
Mark the darts, then slash through the dart lines and rotate them open to create a gentle, curved shape. This removes bulk while giving the yoke its smooth, form-skimming fit.
Re-draw the side seams to blend in the new curved edges, and add seam allowances all around, including the center-back opening where the zipper will be placed.
Cut the following from your chosen fabric: one front yoke on the fold and two back yoke pieces. If using lining, cut the same pieces in lining fabric.
2. Cut the Lower Skirt Panels
The flowing effect of this skirt comes from the fullness in the lower panels. Cut two large rectangles- one for the front and one for the back.
Each should be at least one and a half times your waist circumference in width, though you can increase this for extra volume.
For length, decide your preferred hemline. Many Bohemian skirts use a high-low effect: the front panel finishes around knee length, while the back drops to ankle or maxi length. Measure from the bottom of the yoke to the desired hem to determine the panel lengths. Add hem allowance, then cut your rectangles accordingly.
3. Assemble the Yoke
Sew the side seams of the main fabric yoke pieces with right sides facing. Press the seams open. Repeat the same process with the lining pieces.
Insert the zipper into the center back of the main yoke pieces, ensuring the top is neatly aligned with the waistband edge. Its lower end should stop slightly above the seam where the yoke meets the skirt.
4. Prepare and Attach the Lower Skirt
Sew the side seams of the lower front and back panels. Finish raw edges with your preferred method.
Create gathering stitches along the top edge of the combined lower skirt. Pull the threads gently until the width matches the bottom edge of the yoke.
With right sides together, pin and sew the gathered skirt to the main yoke. Press the seam upward.
5. Add the Lining and Finish the Waist
Place the yoke lining over the yoke, right sides together, and sew along the top edge. Flip the lining to the inside and press.
Fold the bottom lining edge under and stitch in the ditch along the yoke seam to secure it neatly.
6. Hem and Add Decorative Trim
Finish the hem with a narrow fold or rolled hem. For added Bohemian flair, topstitch lace trim along the bottom edge. The skirt is now complete and ready to wear.
