Stitching Instructions for Making the Reusable Cotton Crochet Face Scrubbies Pattern:

Round 1:

  • Start with a magic ring. If you’re unfamiliar with the magic ring, here’s a simple explanation: hold the yarn tail across your fingers, then wrap the yarn around your fingers to create a ring. Insert the hook under the yarn, yarn over, and pull the loop through the ring to form a circle.
  • sc 10 (single crochet 10 stitches) into the magic ring. Make sure the stitches are evenly spaced in the ring.
  • After completing 10 single crochets, join the round with a slip stitch (sl st) into the top of the first single crochet you made. This will close the round.
  • You should have 10 stitches at the end of Round 1.

Round 2:

  • Ch 2 (chain 2). This does not count as a stitch, just the start of the next round. This is to give the correct height for the puff stitch.
  • Puff stitch (puff st) into the same stitch as the chain 2. To make a puff stitch:
    • Yarn over, insert your hook into the stitch, and pull up a loop (you should now have 3 loops on your hook).
    • Yarn over again, insert your hook into the same stitch, and pull up another loop (5 loops on the hook).
    • Yarn over a third time, insert your hook into the same stitch, and pull up another loop (7 loops on the hook).
    • Yarn over a fourth time, insert your hook into the same stitch, and pull up the final loop (9 loops on the hook).
    • Yarn over, and pull through all 9 loops on your hook.
    • Ch 1 to close the puff stitch.
  • Continue making puff stitches into each stitch around. Each puff stitch will be followed by a ch 1 to close it.
  • Join the round with a sl st into the top of the first puff stitch made in this round. At the end of Round 2, you will have 20 stitches (10 puff stitches + 10 chain-1 stitches).

Round 3:

  • Ch 2 (chain 2), which does not count as a stitch.
  • Puff st into the same stitch as the chain 2.
    • Repeat this puff stitch for each stitch around. You will work a puff stitch into both the puff stitch and the chain-1 space from Round 2.
    • After finishing each puff stitch, complete the puff stitch by chaining 1 (so that the puff stitch is followed by the chain 1).
  • When you reach the end of the round, join the round with a sl st into the top of the first puff stitch.
  • By the end of Round 3, you will have 40 stitches (20 puff stitches + 20 chain-1 stitches).

Round 4:

  • Ch 1 (chain 1). This will be the height for the single crochet stitches in this round.
  • Sc (single crochet) in the same stitch and in each stitch around. You will be working single crochets into each puff stitch and chain stitch from Round 3.
  • At the end of the round, join the round with a sl st into the first single crochet you made in this round.
  • By the end of Round 4, you should have 40 stitches.

Finishing:

  • Cut the yarn, leaving a small tail, and fasten off.
  • Use your darning or tapestry needle to weave in the loose ends. Thread the needle through the stitches and pull the yarn through to secure it. Make sure to weave the yarn in neatly so it doesn’t unravel.

Optional Hanging Loop:

  • If you want to add a loop for hanging the scrubbie (to help it dry), you can do so after completing Round 4:
    • Do not fasten off the yarn at the end of Round 4. Leave the working yarn attached.
  • Make a chain of about 3 inches (approximately 10 chains, depending on your tension).
  • Join the loop by inserting your hook into the last stitch of Round 4, and making a sl st to secure the loop.
  • Fasten off the yarn and weave in any loose ends.

Final Result:

Your reusable cotton crochet face scrubbie will be a 3.75-inch (approximately) round, soft, and durable scrubbie. You can make as many as you like and use them to gently exfoliate your skin while being environmentally friendly!
