Abbreviations:

  • ss: slip stitch
  • st(s): stitch(es)

  • Surface Crochet: This technique is used to add the contrast color over the rounds, giving the coaster its final decorative look.

Stitching Instructions for Roller Coasters Pattern:

Round 1:

  • Start the Magic Ring: Begin by creating a magic ring. Alternatively, you can ch3, join with a ss into the first chain to form a circle. However, the magic ring is preferred as it allows you to pull the circle closed tightly.
  • Ch 3 (this counts as the first dc throughout the pattern). Then work 13 dc into the magic ring.
    • You’ll have 13 double crochet stitches in the magic ring, plus the initial ch3, making a total of 14 dc stitches in this round.
  • Join the Round: Join the round by inserting your hook into the top of the 3rd ch of the beginning ch3, and completing a slip stitch (ss) to close the round.
  • End of Round 1: You should now have a small circle of 14 dc stitches. Pull the magic ring tightly to close the hole in the center.

Round 2:

  • Ch 3 (counts as the first dc) to start the next round.
  • Work (2 dc in the same st) 13 times:
    • This means you’ll work 2 dc stitches into the same stitch for the next 13 stitches.
  • Add 1 dc into the same stitch as the ch-3:
    • After working the 13 pairs of 2 dc, add 1 dc into the same stitch as your starting ch3 (which should be the first stitch of the round).
  • Join the Round: Join with a slip stitch (ss) to the third ch of the beginning ch3.
  • End of Round 2: You now have 28 dc stitches in total.

Round 3:

  • Ch 3 (counts as the first dc) to start.
  • Work (2 dc in the same st, 1 dc in the next st) 13 times:
    • For the first set of stitches, work 2 dc into the first stitch, then 1 dc in the next stitch, and repeat this pattern 13 times.
  • Finish with 2 dc in the same stitch as the ch3:
    • Finish the round by adding 2 dc into the same stitch where you started the ch3.
  • Join the Round: Close the round by joining with a slip stitch (ss) into the third ch of the beginning ch3.
  • End of Round 3: You now have 42 dc stitches in total.

Round 4:

  • Ch 3 (counts as the first dc) to start.
  • Work 1 dc, then (2 dc in the same st, 1 dc in each of the next 2 sts) 13 times:
    • Work 1 dc into the first stitch. Then for the rest of the round, work 2 dc in the same stitch, followed by 1 dc in each of the next 2 stitches. Repeat this 13 times.
  • Finish with 2 dc in the same stitch as the ch3:
    • Finish the round by working 2 dc into the stitch where you started the ch3.
  • Join the Round: Close the round by joining with a slip stitch (ss) into the third ch of the beginning ch3.
  • End of Round 4: You now have 56 dc stitches in total. Cut the yarn, leaving a 10 cm tail.

Invisible Fastening:

To secure the yarn and hide the end neatly:

  • Thread your yarn tail through a tapestry needle.
  • Insert the needle into the third ch of the starting dc, under the ‘V’ on top of that stitch.
  • Pull the needle through and then back through the last dc (the final stitch in the round).
  • This creates a seamless slip stitch that blends into the fabric, making it almost invisible.
  • Cut any excess yarn.

Surface Crochet:

  • Switch to your contrast color(s): Change to your chosen contrast color (such as Vivid Blue or any other color you want to highlight in your coaster design).
  • Insert the hook into any stitch of Round 1: Start surface crocheting by inserting your hook into the first stitch of Round 1. Pull a loop of contrast color through.
  • Pull the loop through the next stitch: Insert your hook into the next stitch, pull up a loop, and then pull that loop through the loop already on your hook (this forms a slip stitch).
  • Repeat: Continue working slip stitches around the circle, going stitch by stitch, until you return to the starting point of the round.
  • End the Round: After completing the slip stitches, cut the yarn, leaving a 10 cm tail, and use the invisible fastening method to secure the yarn.
  • Repeat for Rounds 2, 3, and 4: Repeat the surface crochet process for each subsequent round, working over the top of the dc stitches from each round, using your contrast color(s).

Extra Tips:

  • Blocking: After finishing, you may find your coaster slightly curled or concave. Block it by wetting it and allowing it to dry flat. This will help your coaster lay flat and look neater.
  • Starching: To give your coaster extra stiffness, consider using starching spray. This will make the coaster firmer and hold its shape better, ideal for practical use.
