Stitching Instructions for Making the Simple Crossover Bootie Pattern:

Sole of Bootie:

  • Foundation Row:
    • Ch 8 (or the number of sts specified in your pattern, based on the width of the sole for a newborn size).
    • Work sc into the 2nd ch from the hook. Sc in each ch across (7 sts).
    • Turn.
  • Row 2:
    • Ch 1, sc in the first st.
    • Work inc (2 sc in the same st) in the next st.
    • Sc in the next 5 sts.
    • Work inc in the last st.
    • Turn. (You should have 9 sts at the end of this row).
  • Row 3:
    • Ch 1, sc in the first st.
    • Work inc in the next st.
    • Sc in the next 7 sts.
    • Work inc in the last st.
    • Turn. (You should have 11 sts at the end of this row).
  • Continue working the sole in this manner (increasing by 2 sts at the start and end of each row) until the sole measures approximately 7.5 cm (or desired length). For a newborn size, this should be around 12 rows.

Sides and Heel:

  • Shape the heel:
    • Once the sole is the correct length, you will work around the edges of the sole to form the sides of the bootie.
    • Ch 1 and work sc evenly along the sides of the sole, making sure to evenly space the sc stitches. This will be around the edge of the sole.
    • At the heel, continue working along the back side of the sole.
  • Form the top of the bootie:
    • Work sc around, ensuring to maintain even stitch count.
    • If you want to shape the bootie with a little curve, work sc in the next few sts and inc where you need more space (usually around the toe area).
  • Join the top to the sides: When you reach the end of the row, use a sl st to join. Turn the bootie and continue working around, repeating for 2-3 rows to cover the side of the bootie.

Crossover Section:

  • Create the crossover strap:
    • Ch 10 (or the length specified in your pattern).
    • Sc across the chain. You should have 9 sc sts. Turn.
    • Continue working sc in each stitch until the strap reaches the desired length to comfortably cross over the bootie. (The strap typically needs to be long enough to wrap around and create a cross at the front).
  • Attach the crossover:
    • Position the crossover strap across the bootie, from one side to the other, crossing over the top of the foot opening.
    • Once in position, use sc to attach the strap to the bootie, ensuring it stays in place.
  • Secure the ends of the crossover with sl st or sc to the base of the bootie.

Finishing the Bootie:

  • Cuff or trim:
    • Work a sc or hdc border around the top of the bootie (the opening).
    • You can make this trim as long or short as desired (usually 1-2 rows).
    • Sl st to join the last stitch, and FO (fasten off) the yarn.
  • Weaving in Ends: Weave in any loose ends with a yarn needle, ensuring all yarn ends are securely tucked in.

Final Touches:

  • Add decorative elements such as buttons, flowers, or bows to personalize the bootie and give it a unique touch.
  • Try the bootie on a baby doll or your hand to ensure it fits correctly, and adjust any sections if necessary (for a snugger fit or more room).

Notes:

  • When your bootie seems too small or large, adjust the stitch count accordingly. You can also try working the pattern with a different yarn weight or hook size to change the size.
  • Pay close attention to your gauge. If it’s too tight, it may affect the overall fit of the bootie.
