Squared-Off Chevron Baby Blanket

Pattern Description:

This crochet pattern creates a Squared-Off Chevron Baby Blanket, named for its technique of filling in peaks and valleys to achieve a distinct look.

The design is a tweak of an original chevron pattern, substituting single crochet two together (SC2Tog) for skipped stitches in valleys to potentially simplify counting.

It is specifically designed for baby blankets and baby sweaters, making it suitable for little ones.

Instructions for Making the Squared-Off Chevron Baby Blanket Pattern

To create the Crochet Squared-Off Chevron Baby Blanket, follow these instructions for chaining, working the main body, squaring off corners, filling valleys, and adding a border.

Main Blanket Body

  • Chain 156 with Dusk Sky yarn. The pattern repeat is 31 stitches multiplied by any number, plus 1.
  • Row 1: Begin in the second chain from the hook. SC2TOG (single crochet 2 together), then SC (single crochet) in each of the next 13 chains. Next, work 3 SC into the next chain, followed by SC in each of the next 13 chains. Then, SC2TOG twice (meaning you single crochet across 2 stitches, complete it, then single crochet across the next 2 stitches, effectively turning 4 stitches into 2). Repeat this sequence from the asterisk (*) across the row, ending with SC2TOG across the final 2 chains. CH 1 (chain 1) and turn your work.
  • From now on, work in back loops only.
  • Row 2: SC2TOG the first 2 stitches, SC in each of the next 13 stitches, 3 SC in the next stitch, SC in each of the next 13 stitches, then SC2TOG twice. Repeat this sequence from the asterisk (*) across the row, ending with SC2TOG across the final 2 stitches. CH 1 and turn.
  • Repeat Row 2 instructions until your blanket reaches the desired height.
  • Color Changes: Follow this sequence for color changes: work 8 rows of blue (Dusk Sky), then 2 rows of white (Clear White), followed by 2 rows of tan (Feather Gray), then another 2 rows of white. Repeat this entire color sequence, and end your main blanket body with 8 rows of blue.

Squaring Off the First Corner

  • At the end of the last blue row, change to white yarn, CH 1 and turn.
  • SC2TOG the first 2 stitches, then SC in each of the next 14 stitches. CH 1 and turn.
  • Begin in the 2nd stitch (skipping the first SC). SC in each of the next 12 stitches, then SC2TOG the last 2 stitches. Pull through with tan yarn, CH 1 and turn.
  • SC2TOG, then SC in each of the next 11 stitches. CH 1 and turn.
  • Begin in the 2nd stitch. SC in each of the next 9 stitches, then SC2TOG the last 2 stitches. Pull through with white yarn, CH 1 and turn.
  • SC2TOG, then SC in each of the next 8 stitches. CH 1 and turn.
  • Begin in the 2nd stitch. SC in each of the next 6 stitches, then SC2TOG the last 2 stitches. Pull through with blue yarn, CH 1 and turn.
  • SC2TOG, then SC in each of the next 5 stitches. CH 1 and turn.
  • Begin in the 2nd stitch. SC in each of the next 3 stitches, then SC2TOG the last 2 stitches. CH 1 and turn.
  • SC2TOG, then SC in each of the next 2 stitches. CH 1 and turn.

Filling the Valleys on the Bottom of the Blanket

  • Pull up your first loop in the starting chain corner.
  • Follow the instructions for “Filling in the Valley’s” as detailed above, with one exception: the SC2TOG are worked across 3 stitches instead of 4. This is because the middle “legs” of the stitch share the same stitch on the first row when working on the underside of the starting chain. The remainder of the instructions for filling in the valley are the same.

Border

  • With blue yarn, work 2 SC at the end of each row, and skip a row. Work 3 SC into each corner.
  • Join with a slip stitch to the first stitch and CH 1.
  • Continue in the same direction, working 1 HDC (half double crochet) into each SC and 3 HDC into each corner stitch. Do not join.
  • Continue in the same direction with 1 round of SC, working the SC in between each HDC and 3 SC into each corner stitch. Do not join.
  • Continue in the same direction with working 1 SC into each SC and 3 SC into each corner. Slip stitch at the end of the second round of SC and tie off.
  • Slip stitch at the end of the second round of SC and tie off.
