Stitching Instructions for Making the Step On Crochet Sock Pattern:
Cuff:
- Start with a foundation chain: Ch 18 (or more if you need to adjust for your leg width).
- Row 1: Join the chain with a slip stitch to form a ring. Be careful not to twist the chain. Ch 1, sc into each st around. Join with a sl st to the first sc.
- Row 2-8: Ch 1, sc in each st around, join with a sl st to the first sc. Repeat until you reach your desired cuff length (approx. 2 inches for most feet). This part forms the ribbing of the sock, creating a snug fit around the ankle.
Leg:
- Row 9: Ch 1, sc into each st around, join with a sl st to the first sc. Continue in a round without any increases for the next 5-6 rounds (or until the leg portion reaches your desired height, approximately 4-5 inches from the cuff).
Heel:
- Row 10 (Begin Heel Shaping): Ch 1, turn your work. You’ll now work in rows for the heel. Sc in each of the first 12 sts (for medium feet size; adjust based on foot size). Ch 1 and turn. (You should have 12 sts).
- Row 11: Sc in each st across the row (12 sts). Turn.
- Row 12: Sc in the first 10 sts. Turn.
- Row 13: Sc in the first 9 sts. Turn.
- Row 14: Sc in the first 8 sts. Turn.
- Row 15: Sc in the first 7 sts. Turn. You should now have a slanted shape for the heel. Do not fasten off.
Foot (Instep):
- Row 16: Turn the sock so that you can continue working in rounds, connecting the heel to the foot. Sc around the entire sock, working into the side of the heel. Join with a sl st to the first sc. Make sure there are no gaps between the heel and the rest of the sock. Continue in rounds for the foot.
- Row 17-22: Ch 1, sc in each st around. Join with a sl st to the first sc. Repeat these rounds for the foot until the sock reaches the desired length (approximately 5-6 inches for most feet). Check frequently to ensure you have enough length to cover your toes comfortably.
Toe:
- Row 23 (Begin Toe Decreases): Sc in the first 6 sts, then sc2tog (sc 2 sts together). Repeat this pattern around (sc in the first 6 sts, sc2tog). Join with a sl st to the first sc.
- Row 24: Sc in the first 5 sts, sc2tog. Repeat around. Join with a sl st to the first sc.
- Row 25: Sc in the first 4 sts, sc2tog. Repeat around. Join with a sl st to the first sc.
- Row 26: Sc in the first 3 sts, sc2tog. Repeat around. Join with a sl st to the first sc.
- Row 27: Sc in the first 2 sts, sc2tog. Repeat around. Join with a sl st to the first sc.
- Row 28: Sc in the first st, sc2tog. Repeat around. Join with a sl st to the first sc.
- Row 29: Sc2tog around. Join with a sl st to the first sc.
Finishing:
- Fasten off: After your last round, cut the yarn, leaving a long tail for weaving in. Use a tapestry needle to weave the yarn through the remaining stitches, pulling tightly to close the toe. Secure the end.
- Weave in all ends: Use your tapestry needle to weave in any loose yarn ends along the sock. Trim any excess yarn.
Final Notes:
- You may adjust the length of the cuff, leg, and foot depending on your personal preference.
- To make the socks a bit stretchier or looser, you could work the leg portion with half-double crochet (hdc) instead of a single crochet (sc).
- For added texture or design, consider working with a stitch pattern like a shell stitch or ribbing throughout the body of the sock.
