Stitching Instructions for Making Sugar Maple Poncho Pattern:

Foundation Row:

  • Ch 85 (or any multiple of 5 to adjust the width as desired).
    • This will create the width of your poncho. You can make the chain longer or shorter depending on your preference.

Body of the Poncho:

  • Row 1:
    • Sc in the 2nd ch from the hook, then sc in each ch across the row. Turn. (84 sc total) This is the foundation row that gives the base structure for the rest of the poncho.
  • Row 2:
    • Ch 3 (counts as dc), then dc in each sc across the row. Turn. (84 dc total) The ch-3 at the start of the row counts as your first dc. This row will add some height to your fabric.
  • Row 3:
    • Ch 1, then sc in the first dc.
    • Ch 2, sk 2 dc, sc in the next dc. Repeat from to across the row. Turn. (This row creates an open, lace-like pattern with the ch-2 spaces.)
    • You’ll be alternating between single crochet and chain spaces across the row.
  • Row 4:
    • Ch 3 (counts as dc), then dc in the next sc.
    • Ch 2, dc in the next sc. Repeat from to across the row. Turn.
    • This row should create a consistent pattern with alternating dc and ch-2 spaces, filling in the open spaces from Row 3.
  • Row 5:
    • Ch 1, then sc in the first dc.
    • Ch 2, sk 2 dc, sc in the next dc. Repeat from to across the row. Turn.
    • This row mirrors Row 3, continuing the lace pattern.
  • Row 6:
    • Ch 3 (counts as dc), then dc in the next sc.
    • Ch 2, dc in the next sc. Repeat from to across the row. Turn.
    • This row mirrors Row 4, creating consistency in the texture.
  • Repeat Rows 3 through 6 until your piece measures approximately 21 inches in length (or as desired).
    • At this point, you’ll have the basic fabric of the poncho with a lovely textured pattern that creates a visually appealing effect.

Second Panel (Make Another):

  • Repeat the Foundation Row and Body of the Poncho steps for the second panel. This will create the other side of your poncho.
    • Make sure that both panels are the same size.

Assembly:

  • Join the Panels:
    • Lay both panels flat with the right sides facing each other (the side you want visible will be on the outside).
    • Use stitch markers to align the side edges of the panels.
    • Whip stitch the side seams together, leaving the top edge open for the neck.
    • The open space at the top will form the head opening, allowing the poncho to be worn comfortably.

Finishing Touches:

  • Sewing on Decorative Buttons (Optional): You can add 2 decorative buttons to the top of the poncho for style. Place them evenly spaced along the neckline area. Sew them on securely using a sewing needle and thread.
  • Weave in Loose Ends: Use a blunt needle to weave in all the loose ends from your yarn, hiding them within the stitches to keep the project neat.
  • Block the Poncho (Optional): If you like, you can lightly block the poncho to ensure it holds its shape and to even out the stitches.
