Wanderer’s Crochet Hooded Scarf

Pattern Description:

The Wanderer’s Crochet Hooded Scarf is a buttoned, asymmetrical scarf suitable for both men and women, designed to be worn long or as an infinity scarf.

It is crocheted in a single piece, starting with the hood, then extending one side to create the scarf, and incorporating buttonholes and a button at the end. This versatile pattern can be styled in multiple ways.

Materials Needed & Measurements:

  • Yarn: 11.8 oz or 624 yds of Red Heart With Love, Spinach
  • Yarn Weight: Size 4 Yarn
  • Hook: 5.5mm Size I Crochet Hook
  • Notions:
    • Yarn Needle
    • Scissors
    • 1 – 2inch Button
  • Measurements:
    • Gauge: 6 DC X 4 Rows = 2 inches
    • Size: The hood is 14.5 inches by 12 inches tall from the bottom of the scarf to the top of the hood (32 rows), and the scarf measures 102 inches.

Crochet Hood

  • CH 48.
  • Row 1:DC in the 3rd CH from the hook, DC in next 45 CHs. Then, turn your work so you are working on the opposite side of the starting chain. DC in the opposite of each CH in the next 46 CH. You should have 92 DC.
    • Note: Row 1 is worked in one continuous row to close the back of the hood and keep the front open. The starting chain will be at the top of the hood, and no sewing is required for the hood.
  • Rows 2-23: CH2, turn, DC in the next 92 DC.
  • Optional Row: This row provides a clean edge for the scarf.
    • CH 1, turn so you are working down the side of the DC rows. Work 2 SC into the side of each row. You should have 92 SC.

Adding a Scarf

  • Note: In Row 24, you will extend the row to create the scarf. You will chain, then turn and work back along that chain. The length of the scarf can be adjusted by changing the number of chains.
  • Row 24: CH 212, turn to work back along the CH you have made and DC in the 2nd CH from the hook. DC in the next 209 CH, then DC in the next 92 STs. You should have 301 DC.
  • Rows 25-27: CH2, turn, BLODC in next 301 STs.
  • Row 28 (Buttonholes):CH2, turn, BLODC in next 50 STs, CH3, Skip 3 STs, BLODC in next 131 STS, CH3, Skip 3 STs, BLODC in last 114 STs. You should have 295 DC and 6 CH.
    • Note: To create a buttonhole, you CH3 and skip 3 STs. You can try on the scarf to place the buttonholes where you prefer.
  • Row 29: CH2, turn, BLODC in next 301 STs and CHs. You should have 301 DC.
  • Row 30-32: CH2, turn, BLODC in next 301 STs.

Finishing

  • Fasten off and weave in your ends.
  • Sew a 2-inch button to the side of the hood that does not have the long scarf.
  • You can decide if you want the button over the right or left shoulder. Turning the hood inside out allows you to adjust which side the long scarf is on.
