Well Dressed Dog Coat Pattern

Materials Needed:

  • Suggested Yarn:
    • Lion Brand New Basic 175 (75% acrylic/25% wool, Worsted weight, Yarn symbol “4”, UK: 10-12 ply)
    • Color A: Plum – 1 ball (all sizes)
    • Color B: Whisper – 1 ball (all sizes)
    • Color C: Grey – 1 ball (all sizes)
  • Yarn Measurements: 75-250 yards (depending on size), with each ball containing 175 yards/160 meters (3.5 oz).
  • Hook Size: US-K / 6.5mm crochet hook (Furls Crochet)
  • Needle: Yarn needle.
    Pattern Measurements:
  • Chest Sizes:
    • Small: 14″ chest
    • Medium: 18″ chest (shown in pattern)
    • Large: 22″ chest
    • Extra Large: 24.5″ chest

Abbreviations:

  • FDC: Foundation Double Crochet
  • Ch: Chain
  • Dc: Double Crochet
  • Sc: Single Crochet

Special Stitches:

  • Foundation Double Crochet (FDC): A foundation row that combines a chain and double crochet stitch in one step.
  • Changing Colors for Striped Patterns: Involves switching yarn colors at the end of each row, cycling through Colors A, B, and C.
  • Carrying Yarn Along the Side: This technique involves keeping the unused color yarn along the edge of the work, so it is ready for the next row.

Instructions for Well Dressed Dog Coat Pattern:

#1 Back Piece

  • Row 1: Start by making a Foundation Double Crochet (FDC) of 24 (26, 28, 30) stitches. Turn your work.
  • Row 2: Chain 3 (counts as the first double crochet), then crochet as follows:
    • Dc in first st.
    • Skip the next stitch and work 2 dc between the next two stitches.
    • Repeat this pattern: skip 2 sts, 2 dc between the next two sts across the row.
    • 2 dc in the last stitch to complete the row.
  • The stitch count will be: 26 (28, 30, 32) sts.
  • Rows 3-5 (or 7, 9, 11 depending on size): Repeat Row 2. Your stitch count will increase with each row to 32 (38, 44, 50) sts.
  • Row 6-7 (or 8-9, 10-11 depending on size): Change the stitch pattern by skipping the first stitch and working 2 dc between the next two stitches, repeating this pattern across the row and ending with dc in the last stitch.
    Your stitch count remains 32 (38, 44, 50) sts.
  • Rows 8-19 (or 26-43 depending on size): Continue alternating between the patterns in Row 6 and Row 7 for a total of 12 (19, 26, 33) rows. Then break the yarn and set the piece aside for assembly.

#2 – Belly Piece

  • Row 1: Begin with FDC of 6 (8, 10, 10) stitches. Turn your work.
  • Row 2: Chain 3 and follow the same pattern as for the back piece:
    • Skip 1 st and 2 dc between the next two stitches.
    • Repeat: skip 2 sts, 2 dc between the next two sts across.
    • End with dc in last stitch.
  • The stitch count will be: 6 (8, 10, 10) sts.
  • Row 3: Chain 3, and work 2 dc between the first and second st, repeating the pattern of skipping 2 sts, 2 dc between the next two sts, and ending with dc in the last stitch. Your stitch count will be: 8 (10, 12, 12) sts.
  • Row 4: Chain 3, and repeat the same stitch pattern as before, skipping 2 sts, 2 dc between the next two sts, until you have 3 sts remaining. 

Skip 2 sts, and dc between the remaining two sts, then end with dc in the last st. The stitch count will be: 8 (10, 12, 12) sts.

  • Row 5: Chain 3, and follow the previous row’s pattern, but work 2 dc between the next two sts until there are 2 sts left. Skip the last st, and work 2 dc in the final stitch. The stitch count will be: 10 (12, 14, 14) sts.
  • Row 6: Repeat Row 2 for the same number of stitches as the previous row.

#2 Continued – Size-Specific

  • For Small: Continue from Row 7 to Row 12. After completing Row 12, break the yarn and move to assembly.
  • For Medium: Continue from Row 7 to Row 15. Break yarn after Row 15 and proceed to assembly.
  • For Large: Continue from Row 7 to Row 20, break yarn, and then proceed to assembly.
  • For Extra Large: Continue from Row 7 to Row 25, break yarn, and proceed to assembly.

Assembly Instructions

  • Step 1: Align points A to D on both pieces. Using a whip stitch, sew from A to B and from C to D.
  • Step 2: Align points 1 to 4 on the pieces. Sew from 1 to 2 and 3 to 4, making sure the seam runs from the back of the belly piece to the front of the coat for a length of 1″ (1″, 2″, 3″) depending on size.
  • Step 3: With Color A, use a single crochet (sc) to evenly crochet around the leg openings, join, and break the yarn.
  • Step 4: With Color A, use sc to evenly crochet around the back opening, join, and break the yarn.
